Home Remedies For Insomnia: Procedure, Recovery, Risk & Complication

What is the remedy about?

Insomnia can be defined as a sleep disorder where people have difficulty falling asleep easily. It also includes the condition where people abruptly wake up from their sleep at night and then find it difficult to go back to sleep once again.

The following home remedies can be adopted for treating insomnia:

  • Have a glass of honey and milk before going to bed. Milk contains tryptophan, which will increase the serotonin amount in your body. This natural sedative hormone works in your brain and helps you to sleep better. Honey helps in transmitting this hormone to the brain faster.
  • Practising cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps in retraining the body as well as the mind for a faster and deeper sleep. You can create a schedule of going to sleep and getting up at the same time on a regular basis. Listening to your favourite tunes or reading a book as a part of your daily schedule will help you to sleep better.
  • A relaxed and calm environment is a necessity for a deep sleep at night. It is recommended to keep your mobile phones switched off and away from you to prevent disturbances in the night. Digital clocks or any other electrical device that glows in the dark should not be there in your bedroom. You must also ensure that there is no interference of outdoor lights while you are sleeping.
  • Yoga, meditation or maintaining a diary may help if the reason for your insomnia is anxiety.
  • You can try valerian tea or a cup of chamomile tea to treat insomnia. Valerian tea has the ability to reduce the time one takes to generally fall asleep, while letting you rest in a satisfied manner. Chamomile contains a flavonoid called apigenin that produces a calming effect in your brain.
  • There are sedative properties in nutmeg that can help you sleep better. You can add a bit of nutmeg powder in your glass of milk and drink it before going to bed.

Are there any side effects?

Some side effects that these home remedies can have are:

  • In case you have lactose intolerance, consuming milk can lead to abdominal cramping, diarrhea, gas or nausea. These side effects generally develop half an hour to 2 hours after drinking the milk. Apart from that, people with milk allergy can face symptoms such as coughing, an upset stomach, vomiting, itchy eyes, wheezing or swelling. In case one develops an anaphylactic reaction, medical intervention may be required.
  • If you are diabetic or suffering from low blood sugar, you have to be careful about the amount of honey you are consuming. Honey can affect the sugar levels in your blood.

What are the post-remedy guidelines?

The post remedy guidelines of insomnia would include:

  • Keep a tab on the time that you are going to bed and the time that you are waking up. You can maintain a record book for the same. Try to maintain that time every day.
  • If you have started consuming a certain thing for treating insomnia, do not stop abruptly. Complete the course and keep a tab on the improvements, if any.
  • If you are trying to sleep well at night, avoid napping in the afternoon.
  • Exercise and meditation take time to produce results; hence you must continue doing them every day. Discontinuing them suddenly is not recommended.

How long does it take to recover?

The solutions for insomnia can be simple, but the results may appear after a long time. This often results in patients getting frustrated. Self-therapy techniques usually take a while before showing the desired effects. The time for recovery varies from person to person. For some people, a noticeable change in their sleeping pattern can be observed within a week of practising these home remedies. Some people may require three to four months or even longer. The best way to deal with insomnia is in a calm and relaxed manner.

Are the results of the remedy permanent?

Insomnia relapses are very common where you can experience sleep disorders with worse episodes. It generally occurs after showing signs of considerable improvement. In case of chronic insomnia, it may take quite a long time to recover, but it is a slow and sure progress. In the early stages, it may seem that results are hard to come by, but with proper determination and patience, the symptoms will get better. In many cases, insomnia can be permanently cured.

Is there any training or experts required?

The home remedies do not require any training or expertise as such. You can do them on your own at your convenience. However, if you are taking yoga classes, you must practise it under the supervision of an experienced trainer. He/ She can teach you the proper technique so that you do them correctly for beneficial results. If done incorrectly, you may sprain or injure yourself and that can become an added concern for you.

Effectiveness: Medium Side Effects: Low Time for Recovery: High Price Range :

Approx Rs. 100 - Rs. 3000

Training Requirement:

Generally, there would be no training or expert supervision required for the home remedies. In case you are practising yoga, you will require an experienced yoga trainer.

Understanding Insomnia and its Treatment Through Homeopathy

After a hard day the only relief one has is to get a good night’s rest and drift off to the world of sweet sleep. You might find yourself wide awake at night, even when your body is extremely tired. This difficulty to fall asleep naturally is called insomnia. If this inability to sleep continues for a long time, it becomes a sleep disorder and can cause many physical and health issues.

Reasons behind Insomnia

The lifestyle of the twenty first century can be very demanding. A disorder like Insomnia can be easily triggered with various factors they include:

1. Emotional stress: The rollercoaster of emotions that one deals with had a huge effect on their sleep cycle. A stressed mindset will find it hard to be put to rest and as this unwanted stress continues each day.

2. Fluctuating hormones in a woman’s body: Women tend to be the victims of insomnia more often than their male counterparts. These changes may include conditions such as PMS, menstruation problem, pregnancy and menopause.

3. Use of caffeine and anti depressants:  Excessive coffee drinkers might find it difficult to relax their brain, since the caffeine in tea and coffee keeps one brain alert, hence too much of caffeine consumption can be a cause of insomnia. Even smokers might face the same problem since the nicotine acts as an alerting agent.

4. Systemic disorders: Disorders like Asthma and Hyperthyroidism and other various medical conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, asthma, arthritis, allergies, hyperthyroidism and Parkinson’s disease can do the same.

Treating insomnia with homeopathy

The reason why Insomnia can be treated the best way through homeopathy is because this treatment is both free from any side effects and is quick in its effects as well in comparison to other conventional methods which induce artificial sleep that can have harrowing effects.  On the contrary, homeopathy is a completely natural treatment that doesn’t include any artificial drugs and its small doses work just the right way.

1. Coffea Cruda is a homeopathic medicine that is most often used for treating insomnia of acute origin or when the disorder only lasts for a brief moment of time.  As the name suggests it is made from coffee beans.

2. Nux Vomica is more suited when insomnia is due to the abuse of stimulants like too much of alcohol, coffee or nicotine. Other medicines such as opium, aconite, arsenic are also recommended by a specialized homeopath.

It is always recommended to consult a specialized homeopath before taking any medication.

The depression can easily be the cause of the insomnia. In the meantime, you can try out the following recommendations: In your case particularly, do not sleep during the day; don’t even lie down. Go for regular exercise (breathing through your nostrils only) at a fixed time (at about 6 am) every day, whether you sleep or not. You must develop this habit of sleeping by 10 pm latest every night and wake up at a uniform time by 6 am every morning, even if you do not get sleep. If you do not get sleep, just lie down and if you have a bed lamp (or you could get one) lie down and read something light but not exciting. Your eyes will tire and you will fall asleep. If you like you may also put on light and soft music with the sleep function on. Depending on whether you are a visual or auditory person, you may watch TV in a lying down position until you feel sleepy. Have a warm bath before going to bed (for some people a cold bath at night seems to induce sleep! If you are one of them, please do so). Place the head side of your bed in a North-South position. The room must be as dark as possible and there should be no electronic items that give off even a light LED glow. There must be ample ventilation in the room. Avoid strong odors, except lavender, on your body or in the room, or on your sheets and clothes. There should not be any live plants in your bedroom. Sleep with the lightest of clothes or without any clothing. When lying down to sleep, lie down on your left ear as much as possible. Do not sleep directly under an overhead fan. You must eat a good breakfast, a fairly light lunch, and an early dinner, which should be a very light meal. Whatever you eat in the other meals, have only a pure carbohydrate meal at night with any vegetables, and preferably before 8 pm. Do not drink much liquids after or near about dinner time. When lying down to sleep you may use the 4-7-8 breathing pattern of sleep inducement i. E. Breathe in for four counts through your nostril only, hold for 7 counts, and exhale with a whoosh sound, through your mouth only, for 8 counts. Repeat this four times in the morning and just before you sleep at night. If you know Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT (check this out either on YouTube or Google), then please practice this too for sleep induction. Self-hypnosis and slow relaxation techniques, at night will be tremendously useful. Acupuncture or acupressure will both be very useful too. Pray last thing at night before you sleep.

Insomnia (Sleep Disorder)
Hello friends,

I am Dr Vikas Deshmukh.

I am a psychiatrist and sexologist working in Manovikas Clinic at Vashi, Sector 17.

To aaj hum baat karenge Insomnia ke baare mein, Insomnia yani neend kam aana toh aaj kal mai jo patients dekhta hoon usme every alternate patient mai insomnia ka dekhta hoon neend ki takleef hai. Toh itni takleef ye problem badd gayi hai stress aur tanav ki wajah se jaise ki aajkal is century ko century of insomnia bolne lage hai. So jab neend aapko nahi aane ka koi bada karan nahi hai jaise ki depression, anxiety, or psychosis toh mai neeche jo aapko bata raha hoon us tarike se aapka neend aane ke pattern mein sudhar kar sakte ho. Sabse pahla cheez hai yeh ek fix routine sone ka banana sone ka ek fix timing rakho, uthne ka ek fix timing rakho, bahut sare patient bolte hain ki sir nahi kal raat ko teen baje tak neend nahi hai toh hum nau-dus baje tak sote rahe. Initially aapko thoda taklif hoga jaldi uthna main agar neend late aati hai toh bhi thoda sa aapko thakan lagega lekin do teen din mein agar aap uss fix time pe uthna chalu rakhoge toh dheere dheere neend jaldi aayega, agar aap aisa nahi karte ho aur aap late uthte ho toh aap apna need complete karte ho late tak so ke aur phir aapko neend usi time pe aana chalu hoga ki late sona or late uthna. Toh fix time pe uthna bahut zaroori hai aur fix time pe sona bhi bahut zaroori hai. Dusri cheez sone se pehle ek apna ek fix routine rakna jaise ki thoda sa doodh peena, kisi kisi ko doodh peena achha lagta hai, khana thoda jaldi khana bhi zaroori cheez hai, gungune pani se ya warm water se baath lena, relaxation karna, reading karna ye sab cheeze aap kar sakte ho, dusri cheez hai ki sone se ek ghanta pehle saree light aap dim kar dijiye aapke bedroom ka wagera tv, mobile, gadget koi bhi dekhna band kar dijiye kyunki light agar jab dim hoti hai, andhera jab chane lagta hai toh apna body chemical secrete karta hai apna brain, jisko bolte hain melatonin iska matlab woh apni body ko indication deta hai ki abhi aap ko thakan ho gayi hai abhi aap ka sone ka time ho raha hai, ab sona chahiye. Toh iss hisab se sleep ya neend dena body chalu kar deti hai, lekin agar aap bright light mein kaam karoge toh brain ko aisa indication hota hai ke nahi nahi abhi din hi hai, abhi bhi kaam karne ka time hai aur woh melatonin secrete nahi karta hai aur aapko fresh feel ho sakta hai, energetic feel ho sakta hai aur main aane mein dikkat ho sakti hai, iss cheez ki wajah se ek ghanta pehle saree lights dim karna bahut zaroori hai. Sone se sabse important cheez ki raat mein che baje ke baad chai, coffee, cold drink ya heavy exercise na kare, uski wajah se thoda excitement level barta hai aur aapka neend aane mein takleef ho sakti hai. Bed khali neend ke liye bed sleep and bad association baniye ki bed pe jaana hai matlab sona hai, bed par baith ke aap koi office ka kaam kar rahe hai, koi household work kar rahi hai yeh sab cheeze mat kariye, brain ka aur bed ka association aisa rakiye ki bed pe jana hai matlab sona hai, toh ek habituation ho jata hai woh ek neend ke sath association ho jata hai bed ka ki aane ke baad apne aap brain tyari karta hai sone ki, theek hai baki kaam aap baki jagah pe kijiye bed pe mat kijiye. Third thing sone se jab aap sone ke liye jayenge aur aapko neend nahi aati hai toh baar baar aap watch dekhna band kijiye clock watching stop kijiye theek hai iski jagah thoda sa breathing techniques karna, thoda sa mind relaxation karna, meditation karna, ya koi book padna dim light mein, ya koi jaise aap soothing music sun sakte ho ye sari cheeje aap kar sakte ho, dusri cheez koi bhi drug abuse karna alcohol jyada ye karna ye sab cheeze kum rakhna zaroori hai, temperature jo hai room ka hai woh cool rehna zaroori hai, cooll temperature bahut zaroori hai jab aap sote hain 22 se 25 degree ke beech mein rakhiye kyunki aap sabko pata hai ki sardiyo mein ya jab winter season hai usme humko bahut acche se neend aati hai. Toh ye kuch techniques hai neend thik se aane ke liye, agar iske bawajood bhi aapki neend, ha aur ek cheez hai ki din mein thoda exercise kijiye, exercise generally 30 minutes to 45 minutes 5 days in a week karna chahiye, thoda body mein thakan rahega toh neend bhi aapko bahut acche se aapayegi.

Toh yeh saare tips mai aap ko dena chahta tha acchi neend ke liye uske alawa agar aapko jyada problem hai aur jyada information chahiye toh please mujhe contact kijiye se.

Thank you very much for your patient listening.

Treating Migraines, Headaches, Insomnia and Depression
Here are tips of treating migraines, headaches, insomnia and depression

Myself Dr. Girish and I have a clinic, physio health plus at sector 50 at Gurgaon and my team's doctor Amit and all we are treating many patient or migraine headache and insomnia depression and all. So the thing is that we are not considering the thing what happening with us main thing happening with our alignment of the head and neck to this spine this is changing just because of our wrong posture. This is not going to consider any doctors any medicine any all.

So the thing is not the normal alignment of the head to the spinal changing either left or right forward and backward so the whatever the spinal and whatever the brain stance is coming to this part, this is compressing the spinal cord and the resulting in the different symptoms of diabetes, thyroidism and many digestive disorder. Also this is not cured by any medicine so whatever thing we are doing especially for headache in migraine we are aligning your head and neck with your spine to the normal posture which is giving a proper communication to the brain and the spinal cord. Therefore you are not getting any type of pain in future and same thing is happening with the insomnia.

In this modern culture what is happening whatever the coordination between their spine and spinal cord and brain is going disturbed and you re not getting properly relaxation of the body during sleep so you are getting insomnia. We are making your spine your brain coordinated so you get relieve with insomnia you don t have to take any medicine and all what is happening actual with or migraine whatever the nerves whatever the spinal cord part of the brain part these things are going to swing either left or right forward and backward. So whatever the circulation whatever the nerve conduction of the brain with your body is not proper so you are not getting the proper treatment for this.

So first purpose to this cranial therapy and all we have to make that your head you spine to be align so you can get proper headache and migraine treatment. So we have to train your muscle myself we have to train your muscle. We have to train your bone alignment. We have to do every alignment from top to bottom we have to correct your knee correct your for foot we have to correct your pelvic correct your pelvis correct your shoulder.

Many people have seen a lot of the tilting of the shoulder they are doing here in there during the sitting job just because they not have proper core muscle and strength, they re not have proper strength of the body so that why the thing is started from here. Only we are not considering we are there no medicine is going to consider only this part so we are going to treat this part you can get and get to live with diabetes, thyroidism, insomnia, depression, migraine, headache and all.

Regarding any further query you can call us on the Lybrate.
