Home Remedies For Insomnia: Procedure, Recovery, Risk & Complication

What is the remedy about?

Insomnia can be defined as a sleep disorder where people have difficulty falling asleep easily. It also includes the condition where people abruptly wake up from their sleep at night and then find it difficult to go back to sleep once again.

The following home remedies can be adopted for treating insomnia:

  • Have a glass of honey and milk before going to bed. Milk contains tryptophan, which will increase the serotonin amount in your body. This natural sedative hormone works in your brain and helps you to sleep better. Honey helps in transmitting this hormone to the brain faster.
  • Practising cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps in retraining the body as well as the mind for a faster and deeper sleep. You can create a schedule of going to sleep and getting up at the same time on a regular basis. Listening to your favourite tunes or reading a book as a part of your daily schedule will help you to sleep better.
  • A relaxed and calm environment is a necessity for a deep sleep at night. It is recommended to keep your mobile phones switched off and away from you to prevent disturbances in the night. Digital clocks or any other electrical device that glows in the dark should not be there in your bedroom. You must also ensure that there is no interference of outdoor lights while you are sleeping.
  • Yoga, meditation or maintaining a diary may help if the reason for your insomnia is anxiety.
  • You can try valerian tea or a cup of chamomile tea to treat insomnia. Valerian tea has the ability to reduce the time one takes to generally fall asleep, while letting you rest in a satisfied manner. Chamomile contains a flavonoid called apigenin that produces a calming effect in your brain.
  • There are sedative properties in nutmeg that can help you sleep better. You can add a bit of nutmeg powder in your glass of milk and drink it before going to bed.

Are there any side effects?

Some side effects that these home remedies can have are:

  • In case you have lactose intolerance, consuming milk can lead to abdominal cramping, diarrhea, gas or nausea. These side effects generally develop half an hour to 2 hours after drinking the milk. Apart from that, people with milk allergy can face symptoms such as coughing, an upset stomach, vomiting, itchy eyes, wheezing or swelling. In case one develops an anaphylactic reaction, medical intervention may be required.
  • If you are diabetic or suffering from low blood sugar, you have to be careful about the amount of honey you are consuming. Honey can affect the sugar levels in your blood.

What are the post-remedy guidelines?

The post remedy guidelines of insomnia would include:

  • Keep a tab on the time that you are going to bed and the time that you are waking up. You can maintain a record book for the same. Try to maintain that time every day.
  • If you have started consuming a certain thing for treating insomnia, do not stop abruptly. Complete the course and keep a tab on the improvements, if any.
  • If you are trying to sleep well at night, avoid napping in the afternoon.
  • Exercise and meditation take time to produce results; hence you must continue doing them every day. Discontinuing them suddenly is not recommended.

How long does it take to recover?

The solutions for insomnia can be simple, but the results may appear after a long time. This often results in patients getting frustrated. Self-therapy techniques usually take a while before showing the desired effects. The time for recovery varies from person to person. For some people, a noticeable change in their sleeping pattern can be observed within a week of practising these home remedies. Some people may require three to four months or even longer. The best way to deal with insomnia is in a calm and relaxed manner.

Are the results of the remedy permanent?

Insomnia relapses are very common where you can experience sleep disorders with worse episodes. It generally occurs after showing signs of considerable improvement. In case of chronic insomnia, it may take quite a long time to recover, but it is a slow and sure progress. In the early stages, it may seem that results are hard to come by, but with proper determination and patience, the symptoms will get better. In many cases, insomnia can be permanently cured.

Is there any training or experts required?

The home remedies do not require any training or expertise as such. You can do them on your own at your convenience. However, if you are taking yoga classes, you must practise it under the supervision of an experienced trainer. He/ She can teach you the proper technique so that you do them correctly for beneficial results. If done incorrectly, you may sprain or injure yourself and that can become an added concern for you.

Effectiveness: Medium Side Effects: Low Time for Recovery: High Price Range :

Approx Rs. 100 - Rs. 3000

Training Requirement:

Generally, there would be no training or expert supervision required for the home remedies. In case you are practising yoga, you will require an experienced yoga trainer.

Facial Rejuvenation: Advantages of Dermal Fillers For Perfect Skin!
Facial aging is an issue which shows its first signs around the late twenties and early thirties. It is manifested in the form of fine lines, dark circles, wrinkles and rough skin, especially near the eyes and lips. This process cannot be reversed. It is a part of human body and the way the skin matures with age. But, it can be treated through surgical and non-surgical or natural means to make sure that the process of aging is slowed down. Factors Affecting Facial Aging: There are several factors which affect the facial aging and aggravate the process faster. Some of these factors are: If you smoke excessively, your face would sooner or later start showing signs of aging prematurely. At times, this process gains speed due to genetic issues. Stress and anxiety are the most important reasons for a person to start showing signs of aging at an early stage of life. If you lead a hectic lifestyle which involves excessive travelling throughout different climates, the exhaustion may be manifested through facial aging. What are Dermal Fillers? Dermal fillers help to diminish facial lines and restore volume and fullness in the face. As we age, our faces naturally lose subcutaneous fat. The facial muscles are then working closer to the skin surface, so smile lines and crow's feet become more apparent. The facial skin also stretches a bit, adding to this loss of facial volume. Other factors that affect the facial skin include sun exposure, heredity, and lifestyle. Dermal fillers can be used to: Plump thin lips Enhance shallow contours Soften facial creases and wrinkles Improve the appearance of recessed scars Dermal fillers can be very helpful in those with early signs of aging, or as a value-added part of facial rejuvenation surgery. Administration: You must make a note of the fact that dermal filling is not considered to be a type of surgical treatment. However, it does use anaesthesia while being administered. In fact, the patient is first given a dose of anaesthesia and left to rest for about half an hour. Some fillers have anesthesia in the syringe itself otherwise, we apply numbing cream or topical anesthesia. Thereafter, dermal fillings are applied with the help of fine needles. You need to realise that the use of fine needles with precision can be done only by those who have been specially trained for it. Thus, if your dermatologist recommends you for a treatment of dermal filling, then he/she ought to be a trained expert in carrying out the procedure. If you, on your own prefer to get this treatment done, then you should also find an expert who is well trained in administering this procedure. Thus, dermal fillers are quite famous in the world of facial dermatology to reverse the aging process. It helps in reducing fine lines, wrinkles and adds volume and smoothness to the skin.

Appendectomy - Long Term Complications Associated With It!
What is an Appendectomy? An appendectomy (which is sometimes referred to appendicectomy ) is the surgical elimination of the organ known as the appendix. Appendectomy is mostly performed as an emergency surgical procedure, when patients suffer from appendicitis. How is Appendectomy Performed? Appendectomy can be performed both as an open operation as well as laparoscopically. An appendectomy is most often performed laparoscopically, if the diagnosis is in doubt, or if the patients feel that they need to hide their telltale surgical scars near their umbilicus or in the pubic hair line. However, although laparoscopic appendectomy has its cosmetic advantages, and its recovery time is a little quicker, this procedure is more expensive than conventional open surgery. Conventional Open Appendectomy- In the conventional open surgery, the surgeon makes an incision which is less than 3 inches in length in the lower right section of the abdomen. Once the infected appendix is identified, the surgeon separates the infected appendix from its surrounding tissues and removes it surgically from the cecum (an intraperitoneal pouch that forms the junction of the small and large intestine). After that, the cecum is closed and is returned back into the abdomen. In the end, the muscle layers and the skin are sewn together and the incision is closed. Laparoscopic Appendectomy (LA)- While performing appendectomy laparoscopically, which is also known as LA, four incisions of 1 inch in length are made in the abdomen. One incision is made near the umbilicus, while another one is made in an appropriate region between the umbilicus and the pubis. The other two incisions, which are even smaller in size, are made in the right side of the lower abdomen. The surgeon then passes the camera and special laparoscopy instruments through these openings and after identifying, frees the appendix from its surrounding tissues. Next, the appendix is removed from the cecum and the site of its former attachment is sewed. The infected appendix is removed from the body of the patient through any one of the two 1 inch incisions. In the end, the laparoscopic instruments are removed and the incisions are sutured and closed. During this whole procedure, the intraperitoneal space is filled with medical grade carbon dioxide gas, to inflate the abdomen, which is released after the surgery. Recovery Time For Appendectomy- The recovery time for appendectomy depends on and varies with the type of procedure and anesthesia used during the surgery. While laparoscopic appendectomy can be done on an outpatient basis so that the patients can recover back at home, an open surgical procedure will require an overnight or even longer hospital stay. Normally patients after appendectomy can resume their normal daily activities within a few days. However, for full recovery, it may take four to six weeks. Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities during this period of time. Risk and Long Term Consequences of Removing the Appendix- While wound infections are the most common complications of this surgery, formation of an abscess in the area of the surgical incision and also in the area close to the removed appendix has also been noticed as an aftermath of appendectomy. Other rare complications may include lack of intestinal peristalsis (ileus), gangrene of the bowel, injuries to the internal organs and infections in the peritoneal cavity (peritonitis). Major long-term consequences of appendectomy include increased risks of bowel obstruction, stump appendicitis (infection in the retained portion of the appendix still stuck with the cecum) and development of incisional hernia at the site of the scar.

What you eat has a direct effect on your skin; eat healthy and your skin looks healthy, eat unhealthy food and your skin looks dull. Eating right can even fight signs of aging thus, negating the need for procedures like Botox. Not only does it cost less, but healthy food boosts your overall health as well. Here are 6 such foods that can help you fight signs of aging and give you a flawless complexion. Turmeric: Turmeric is well known for its yellow colour and anti-inflammatory properties. Many home remedies suggest the use of turmeric for a number of health ailments including skin conditions. Turmeric can fight signs of aging by reducing inflammation and oxidation. This, in turn, helps the skin heal faster. This spice can be added to your food or mixed with warm milk to benefit from it. Tomatoes: Tomatoes are rich sources of vitamin C and lycopene. Vitamin C helps stimulate the production of collagen and hence keeps the skin firm while lycopene protects the skin against harmful UV radiation. As a general rule of thumb, the deeper red the tomato is, the better it is. These berries also have anthocyanins that boost the effects of vitamin C Honey: Honey can be eaten or applied topically on the skin to benefit from it. Honey helps keep the body hydrated by absorbing moisture and preventing the skin from drying out. It also has antibacterial properties that prevent acne and other breakouts. Ideally, honey should be used and consumed in its raw, unprocessed form. Nuts: Nuts are a great snack that keeps your skin looking young and fresh. Almonds are excellent sources of vitamin E that help fight acne, psoriasis and eczema among other skin ailments. Walnuts are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids that keep the skin soft and supple. Brazil nuts are also rich sources of vitamin E. However, keep in mind the high calorific value of these nuts and do not overindulge in them. Avocados: Avocados are filled with essential fatty acids that moisturize and nourish skin. They are also rich in Vitamin B, C and E. While vitamin C boosts collagen production, vitamin E maintains the elasticity of skin and prevents sagging.

Hi One of the simplest and most effective ways to induce sleep is to rub some oil on the scalp and the soles of the feet before going to bed. Use sesame oil, brahmi oil, jasmine oil, or coconut oil and massage gently for a few minutes. Slightly warming the oil before applying is helpful... 1-1 drop of cow ghee in both nostrils at night time before sleep
