Home Remedies For Dehydration: Procedure, Recovery, Risk & Complication

What is the remedy about?

Dehydration is a health condition in which your body fluid level becomes critically low. Every cell in your body needs water to function properly. Hence, Dehydration will not cause disputed function in a single organ, but in many. If dehydration is not treated properly, it may cause severe disorders. Here is a set of home remedies to fend off Dehydration. The first and foremost remedy is homemade Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS). To a jar of water (1 litre), add 5-6 teaspoons of sugar and a half teaspoon of salt. Make sure the solution is unsaturated. Drink this several times a day. This is one of the easiest and popular home remedies to treat Dehydration. Yogurt is next on the list. It is very helpful to restore the hydrated you. It has a high amount of electrolytes responsible for hydration. You can either eat a cup of yogurt (plain) with some grated cheese on top once or twice a day or have rice with yogurt and a pinch of salt. Bananas are rich in Potassium and other minerals which are responsible for increasing the essential minerals your body need every day. Loss of excessive amount of minerals from your body may also cause cramped muscles. Bananas take care of that as well and ensure smooth functioning of muscles. Eating one to two bananas is enough to keep you hydrated. You can also choose cold banana smoothie if you don't want to eat it in solid form. You should eat as many watery fruits as you can because they will keep you hydrated and prevent loss of water constantly. Watery fruits include watermelon, lemon, strawberries, cantaloupe, etc. Watery veggies like cucumber and tomatoes have similar benefits.

Are there any side effects?

Side-effects of such home remedies are highly unlikely. But being mindful about consuming anything is important depending upon individual condition to not worsen the problem. If you are suffering from Dehydration caused by Diarrhoea, be extra careful about what you eat or drink, for this has a major role to play in your body system. Consuming unwashed fruits or vegetables, unpackaged yogurt, and unhealthy water will make you pay in the long run. Please give hygiene priority before your intake. Also, be careful about the measurements. Don't cross the level of 6 teaspoons of sugar and half a teaspoon of salt while preparing your home ORS. If you do, it will result in the high content of Sodium (Hypernatremia) and Potassium in the blood which is not healthy at all. Too much Yogurt can add more than 500 calories to your diet per day. For women, eating excessive yogurt is never a good practice. This is because Yogurt has a type of sugar named Galactose, produced from Lactose which has the ability to develop Ovarian Cancer in women. It can also cause a weak immune system in you and infection from probiotics. Besides this, check the product's expiration before you buy them. Expired products will only worsen the already bad situation. Similarly, bananas can give you migraine headaches due to the presence of Tyrosin, an amino acid in it. Tyrosin gets converted into Tyramine and triggers a migraine. So keep all these points in mind before you start using these home remedies.

What are the post-remedy guidelines?

Post remedy guidelines are important to make the results permanently fixed. You might get bored of drinking gallons of plain normal water every day and stop this practice. Don't let your taste matter here. If you stop drinking fluids altogether, you will again fall into the trap of dehydration. Under such circumstances, try drinking alternatives of plain water like coconut water, sports drinks, fruit juices, etc. Coconut water is considered to be the nature's sports drink. Its high amount of electrolytes is needed to maintain a water balance in your body. Next, add hydrating foods to your eating habits. Continue doing this on a regular basis to rule out the future possibility of Dehydration. If you work out regularly, please carry a frozen water bottle or a sports drink while you are exercising. A major amount of water is lost when you exercise heavily and it is required to restore it again by drinking fluids during or after your gym session.

How long does it take to recover?

It usually takes a day or two to recover from mild Dehydration but it takes around 6 days to recover completely from heavy Dehydration after suffering from severe diseases. Dehydration is never a healthy sign and can make you feel irritated and sick. It is always recommended to seek a doctor's help as soon as you notice the symptoms like dry mouth, headache, fatigue, etc. However, the duration of recovery is mostly in your hands. The more you replenish yourself with oxygenated water, the better. You may feel the urge to urinate frequently but don't get tired because of this. This is a sign of healthy functioning in your body. After urination, refill yourself with a glass of water again. Keep up this habit for fast result.

Are the results of the remedy permanent?

The effects can be absolutely permanent if you walk on the right path. Although, you may suffer from dehydration due to other diseases like excessive vomiting during Diarrhoea or Stomach Infection. In that case, the recurrence of Dehydration is natural but if you continue following the guidelines to prevent yourself from getting dehydrated again, you will certainly have a better health. Try consuming tropical fruits like Pineapple, Mangos, and Grapes in plenty every day. You can prepare healthy smoothies of different fruits like Kiwi, Orange or Berries. This will be the most beneficial way of treating your Dehydration. Do these to make the effects permanent

Is there any training or experts required?

No training is required to fight against Dehydration. It is a simple decline in the fluid level of your body. It can be easily treated by yourself with these home remedies. Don't try out any medication without consulting with a medical professional. Natural remedies are safe and effective as long as you are careful about the guidelines. Depending on the level or intensity of Dehydration, it may take you a long time to completely fight it out. So have patience and take help of medical experts if you wish to. Remember, water is the secret to a wholesome life.

Dehydration and Its Home Remedies

Dehydration, in simple words, is shortage of water in the body. Every cell in the body needs water in order to function properly. In fact, an adult's body weight is 60% water, while an infant's is up to 80% water. Other than oxygen, there is nothing that the body needs more than water.

Water - the irreplaceable

Water is so important because it has many critical functions in the body. Among other activities, water:

* lubricates the joints and connective tissues

* helps digest the food

* liquifies the mucus when you have got a cold

* eliminates bodily heat through sweat

* carries oxygen, carbohydrates and fats to working muscles

* flushes waste from the body through urine

* wards off bladder infections by washing out harmful bacteria

* helps curb your appetite

Types of dehydration;

Mild, moderate and severe are the three types of dehydration. In mild dehydration, body loses 5% of its fluid. Once the loss of body fluid reaches 10%, it is moderate dehydration where medical attention is required. Once the loss of body fluid reaches 15%, it is severe dehydration where the affected person should be hospitalized immediately for intravenous replacement of fluids. In summer one could have lot of sweating which is very normal as the body balances its temperature. The only precaution that could prevent any type of dehydration is to replace lost fluid by drinking plenty of water regularly. Make it a point to take a minimum of 3 litres of water daily.

Causative factors;

Dehydration can happen due to:

* insufficient liquid/water intake

* excessive loss of fluids due to diarrhea, vomiting and sunstroke

Signs and symptoms:

* furious thirst

* dizziness or nausea

* extreme exhaustion

* loss of elasticity of skin and wrinkling

* reduced urination

* easily irritable

* headache

* dry tongue

* weakness

Dehydration - 5 Signs to Look For!

5 Signs your body is lacking in water

Water is indispensable for the human body as 90% of the brain and almost 60 per cent of an adult body is chiefly made up of water. Water is just as important as any of your meals. Each cell and organ depends on water for its proper functioning and for flushing out toxins and fats from the body. An average man must consume roughly 3 litres (10-12 glasses) of water per day; and a woman requires about 2.5 litres (8-10 glasses). If you're not meeting this requirement, you might be fall prey to dehydration.

The state of water deficiency or dehydration can be determined through various symptoms. Read on to know the 5 most common signs:

1. The colour of your urine is dark

The colour of your urine indicates your health. The lesser the water you drink, the darker is the colour of your pee. If your urine is pale yellow, you drink a sufficient amount of water. If it's dark yellow and concentrated, it's a sign for you to refill on water. Also, if you haven't urinated for more than two hours, you should immediately gulp 2 glasses of water.

2. You experience frequent headaches

Headaches are often caused by dehydration when the pressure from your blood vessels falls. Dehydration makes it tough for your heart to pump enough oxygen to the brain. Drinking sufficient amounts of water ensures the flow of oxygen in your body.

3. You feel dizzy and fatigued

Lack of water can often lead to laziness and restlessness. It may also cause a rapid change in your blood pressure. Low or high blood pressures are stimulants of fatigue. Water gives you instant energy that wakes up your whole system, thus making you feel revitalised.

4. You have constipated bowel movements

Water is one of the top natural remedies for constipation or troubled bowel movements. If your fluid intake is low, you're likely to have stomach, gastric and bowel problems. The digestive system depends on water to help food move through both the intestines. It checks the functions of the digestive tract, while also keeping it flexible and clean.

5. You experience brain fogs and blackouts

Your brain cells and nerves react severely to water loss. You may start feeling a lack of concentration along with temporary memory loss. Blackouts and fogs are common when you have a deficit of water. You might even experience difficulty in carrying out cognitive tasks.

If you're experiencing similar issues, you must enhance your daily water intake. You can try carrying a sipper around, which allows you to keep a tab on your water consumption. To relish water as a refreshing beverage, you can infuse freshly chopped fruits and herbs in a pitcher of chilled water. This flavoured water also cleanses your body of all toxins and chemicals, thus keeping you fresh. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

In summers, one must take care of his hydration levels as the heat and rising temperature of the day in summers makes you to lose water from your body and create the status of dehydration. Moreover, in summers one suffers from diarrhea (डायरिया (Diarrhea). लगातार लूज मोशन यानि पतला दस्त आना, उल्टी होना डायरिया कहलाता है।) which happens because food gets spoiled quickly in summers.

Therefore, one must be careful while eating outside food in order to avoid food infection and thereby loose motions and dedydration.

If your tongue and throat feel dryness, you tend to be sleepy and your concentration to listen anything around start diminishing, it is sign of dehydration. If pulse increase, urine formation decrease it is bad sign during dehydration which poses a risk to your kidneys.

Hye. Thanks for the query. Summer can not only dehydrate you but also draw you off of energy and stamina, making you feel unwell and feeling low. A healthy and balanced diet is essential, especially in the summer. The summer heat deprives our body of all the energy. Excessive perspiration in summer results in dehydration. Rehydration is essential irrespective of the activity levels and thirst pangs. Liquids at very cold temperatures should be avoided. Increased consumption of very cold liquids, results in the constriction of the blood vessels. This in turn reduces the loss of heat which is essential in summers. Holy basil seeds/ tulsi seeds added to water or fruit juices proves an effective cooling drink for the summers. Soft drinks contain added sugar, preservatives and colors. Therefore fresh fruit juices without added sugar are preferred in summers. Fried foods, such as french fries, potato patties, chips, samosa, wada pav should be restricted thereby reducing the thermal effect of fat. A light and healthy meal will make you feel comfortable. Avoid very spicy foods. Whole fresh fruits supply a good amount of water, in addition to minerals and vitamins. A bountiful supply of vegetables and fresh fruits are beneficial. Lemon juice, barley water, butter milk and tender coconut water are the best sources of hydration.

Homeopathy Constitutional Remedies
Know how Homeopathy constitutional remedies can cure Chronic cases

Hi, I m Dr. Monty Talwar, practicing in Gurgaon, I have an experience of about 20 years in homeopathy, I practice classical homeopathy wherein we take into account the patient s nature and temperament especially in chronic cases. The constitutional cases are very deep-acting and they will stimulate the immune system of the patient. Thereby, the patient s body fights on its own, so we are not providing a continuous stimulus or a medicine from outside as the body takes charge of itself.

The example in thyroid cases, especially in hypothyroidism when we give the constitutional medicine it stimulates the thyroid gland so that it starts secreting the hormone on its own. As a result, the patient can be off the thyroid medicine. Similarly, in frequent colds and coughs in children where they fall sick too often, so these medicines build up the immunity of the child, so that they do not fall sick that often. Because of this individualistic approach, homeopathy is considered to be a holistic science.
