Blepharoplasty: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

What is Blepharoplasty? How is the treatment done? Are there any side effects? How long does it take to recover? What is the price of the treatment in India? Are the results of the treatment permanent?

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic procedure concerning the eye of the patient. This procedure is generally used to improve the aesthetic look of the eye. Many people suffer from puffiness, dark circles and other disorders of the of eye, which may be caused due to underlying conditions. In some cases, fatty deposits may be formed on the upper eyelid. This can damage the overall appearance and attractiveness of a face.

Even though the surgery is usually carried out for the cosmetic benefits, older people, whose sagging eyelids often limit their field of vision, can also undergo the same. However, undergoing Blepharoplasty alone will not eliminate the dark circles and wrinkles under your eyes. Patients will often need to undergo separate procedures for the added benefits. Certain factors determine whether a particular person is qualified to undergo Blepharoplasty.

The surgery can only be performed on people without serious eye conditions. Smokers are also disqualified from undergoing Blepharoplasty. Patients should not suffer from healing disorders if they want to undergo the procedure. Last but not the least, the patient should have a realistic goal in mind when they undergo the surgery.

How is the treatment done?

Blepharoplasty involves a surgery on the eye region, which can be quite dangerous if not performed by a properly trained professional. The excess skin or fat on the eyelids are marked prior to the operation. The patient is put under general anesthesia once the marking of the regions of excess tissue is complete.

A small incision on the crease of the eyelid is enough to remove the excess fat from the area. Once the incision has been completed, the deep muscle is tightened, so that the doctor can remove the excess fatty tissue from under the lid. Finally, the incision is closed off using fine sutures. This will prevent long-term scarring of the tissue.

In case the procedure involves operating on the lower eyelid, doctors generally use transconjunctival Blepharoplasty in order to remove the excess fatty contents.

An advanced form of blepharoplasty uses lasers to remove the excess fat from the eyelids. In this procedure, a high-powered laser is used and does not involve an incision on the lids. Since there is no need for an invasive surgery, the healing time post the operation is reduced drastically.

Who is eligible for the treatment?

People who have bag formations under their eyes, due to fatty deposits and puffiness should consider the treatment. Similarly, people with wrinkles and puffiness in the lower eyelids can try out the treatment as well. Elderly people whose drooping eyelids may be causing them to lose vision in their eyes are also eligible to undergo the same treatment in order to enhance their vision.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

Blepharoplasty is a very safe procedure and can be sought by any person looking to improve their appearance. However, doctors do not perform the same on people with eye conditions or diseases, as it may alleviate the issue further. The treatment is also not possible on people who smoke cigarettes on a daily basis. So, if you or anyone you know wants to undergo Blepharoplasty, they should consider giving up the smokes entirely. Smoking can complicate the procedure and enhance the risks.

Are there any side effects?

Blepharoplasty is usually an invasive procedure, unless you undergo the laser treatment. In case of normal surgery, a small incision is made on the eyelids. Even though sutures are used to close off the incision, this stitch may cause certain side effects. For instance, some people may experience itching and difficulty sleeping due to the sutures. Similarly, the scarring from the incision may take quite a while to disappear completely.

Other side effects include the swelling and bruising of the region. This may be painful for some people and may take some time to heal. Blurred vision is also an additional side effect from the surgery, which may affect certain people.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

After the surgery is complete, doctors usually advice proper care for a few days to enhance the healing of the eyelids. The post treatment guidelines include following the correct procedure for applying ointment on the eyes. You should also check for any pain, bleeding or abnormality in the eyes.

Since the sutures will remain fresh, patients should also refrain from scratching their eyes, even if they have an urge to do so. While stepping out during the day, ensure that you keep your eyes protected through the use of a pair of sunglasses. If you are in the middle of an uncontrollable urge to scratch your eyes, you can apply a cool compress on the area. This will provide relief to the irritated area.

How long does it take to recover?

The surgery requires a very small incision on the eyelids. Generally, patients who undergo Blephoraplasty usually recover in just a couple of days. The wound starts to heal and after a week or two, doctors will remove the sutures. The scarring may stay for a while, but the overall pain and incision will heal in just a few days after surgery.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

The treatment price can vary from one place to the other within India. However, since this is a very minor surgery, people can undergo it without spending too much. Depending on where you seek treatment, the cost incurred by you would be around Rs. 2,500 to Rs. 6,000.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

Results of the surgery are not permanent and can return at a later date. For instance, the fatty deposits may reappear once the surgery is complete. The under-eye wrinkles may also come back after the surgery if proper care is not maintained. However, people are free to undergo Blepharoplasty surgeries as many times as they want.
