I am suffering from depression since last 15 years. I am using paroxetine 50 mg and lamictal 200 mg since last 10 years. Depression is under control to some extent. I am experiencing severe sexual problems like lack of erection and libido which is affecting my family life. Kindly advise safe add on medication to overcome this sex related problems.

Dear lybrate-user, paroxetine can cause erectile difficulties. There are other antidepressants that does not cause erectile dysfunction. Please discuss openly with your wife and the treating psychiatrist. Antidepressant may be changed or another tablet may be added or sex therapy is advised to both of you so that family life is not affected.

Paroxetine belongs to ssri group of medications which though are good antidepressants cause sexual dysfunction commonly. But not to worry, they are reversible and you need to consult your psychiatrist and get your prescription revised for control of your depression as well as improvement in your sexual performance do not take these on your own for many years, then the problem becomes much more difficult to handle.
