My mother was diagnosed for vestibular schawanoma by MRI Scan. She is 42 years old from chennai. She is complaints headache, dizziness, palsy of tongue. She was admitted for the same and they said that it may grows in future which will affects the norms. They said surgery will be solution for this but there are complications like unconsciousness or others. My query is that what will be the best remedies whether surgery or radiation therapy and what are the complications after this? What will be the cost of surgery?

Dear lybrate user, sorry to hear about your mother. but before answering to your question I would like to have certain inputs. Does she have weakness on one side of the body, does she have hearing issues is she hearing any noise in the ear [tinnitus] does she have any swelling in the skin Schwannoma is a benign tumor which occurs in the near in the neural sheath. It can happen anywhere in the body but when it occurs in the brain it can cause defect in hearing, vocalising, fits, sometimes even paralysis you have to know one thing that wherever there are nerves in the body there is a possibility of a schwannoma. As far as the cost of the surgery is issue any intracranial tumor surgery will cost anywhere between 1.5 to 2.5 lacs in case of schwannoma. It has got a tendency to reappear so surgery is not a perfect solution but is better when compared with radiotherapy which has got multiple side effects.
