I am a recent recruit to the world of diabetes. Doc says that since my aunt has diabetes from the time when she was 10, I was at risk. I want to reduce my riliance on medicines that doctor has prescribed (Zoryl M2 Forte in morning and Zoryl M1 Forte in evening along with medicine for High BP and cholesterol). Please let me know what changes in diet and lifestyle do I need to make to avoid eating these medicines? I am vegetarian.

Hello, Thanks for the query. Once diabetes is diagnosed, then it has to be treated with appropriate drugs to control blood glucose. Only when a person is in pre-diabetic state, it is possible to either prevent or postpone the condition by adapting a modified lifestyle. Since you have not mentioned any details about fasting, PP glucose levels and HbA1c%, it is difficult to know how well blood glucose is controlled. As regards giving dietary advise, I need to know following details apart from details mentioned above: present dietary pattern and extent of daily exercise. With a BMI of 26.16 kgs/M2 you are overweight. Ideal should be about 85 kgs. Hence weight reduction is essential. You will have to avoid sweets, deep fried foods, junk foods, pastries, bakery items and foods made from maida. Consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads, and fruits. Refrain from alcohol and smoking. Exercise for at least 1 hour plus a day. You can reduce the requirement of medication by adapting a modified lifestyle, but total elimination may be almost impossible. Thanks.
