Dear Lybrate-User, Dandruff is a very commonly reported complaint of many patients. Its treatment can take up some time but is permanently curable. In medical terms, dandruff is called pityriasis capitis. A little background on your condition. Dandruff can be of two varieties, Dry and Greasy Variety, it is also classified as stages. Kindly read the following and identify the progress of your dandruff problem. Dry Variety: - scales are fine, thin, white, or greyish, dry or only slightly greasy. - Hair is dry and lusterless. - Mild to moderate itching - Scales fall freely on shoulders. - Dandruff is more common in winters than summers. It signifies exaggeration of normal exfoliation of the horny layer of the epidermis and usually affects people with dry skin and scalp. Greasy Variety - In this variety both the scalp and the rest of the skin are oily. - Disease may occur in well defined circumscribed patches or diffusely all over the scalp. - Later the condition may extend to flexures and other hairy regions. - It may extend typically to eyebrows, eyelids, back of the ear, beards, chest area, armpits, private area. Now, identify the stage. - Grade 1: Mild- Visible, fine scales, non-itching, noninflammatory, of pure cosmetic significance. - Grade 2: Moderate-Large scaling with itching, mild inflammatory changes with associated diffuse alopecia, acne, seborrhea - Grade 3: Severe-severely inflammatory, severe itching, thick adherent scales, associated with seborrhoeic dermatitis or underlying psoriatic origin. There can be many causes of dandruff, some include Unbalanced diet, constipation, sedentary occupation, common at puberty, skin oily secretion, sebum sebaceous secretion, certain build up by product of micro-organism in the skin. If you can eliminate these causes it will definitely help in fast and permanent relief. Line of treatment includes -Frequent washing of hair and scalp (to eliminate loose scales) -Avoiding unnecessary use of excessive hair oil (greasy scale) but a minimal application of NDO at night to soften scales fix easy dislodgement by wash. - If dry scalp, use Valeda Herbal Jojoba Grooming ointment. - Constitutional medicines to control dandruff or external hair tonic, fix resistant cases, extremely severe forms or if related to psoriasis or sebaceous dermatitis or with condition eg secondary infection eczema, and diffused alopecia I would suggest that you follow a proper hair care routine along with constitutional medicines to cure the infection and cure it from the root.
