A low bun value may be caused by a diet very low in protein, malnutrition, or severe liver damage. A low bun-to-creatinine ratio may be caused by a diet low in protein, a severe muscle injury called rhabdomyolysis, pregnancy, cirrhosis, or syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (siadh). Low urea levels are not common and are not usually a cause for concern. They can be seen in severe liver disease or malnutrition but are not used to diagnose or monitor these conditions. Low urea levels are also seen in normal pregnancy. Urea levels increase with age and also with the amount of protein in your die.
