What is the treatment?

Weight loss treatments, as the name suggests, are administered in order to help a patient lose weight. Weight gain can occur due to many different reasons. One of the most basic reasons for weight gain is simply eating more than your body requires. This leads to fat being deposited in your body and stored for later (as it is not immediately needed to generate energy). The fat then contributes to the overall weight gain and adds to the padding on your body. The treatment for this cause of weight gain is to see a dietician and follow a plan that is designed for your body.

Weight gain can also be caused due to a condition or illness. Hyperthyroidism often leads to weight gain. Sometimes, this can be controlled with thyroid medication and sometimes it can’t be. In this case, either the treatment (which is medications) works, or doesn’t, in which case the only thing that can be done is to find a way to live with the additional weight.

Weight gain can also be caused as a side effect to a medicine. In this case, the treatment is to stop that particular medicine and start using a substitute. Another reason why women can gain weight is pregnancy. Sometimes, the baby weight is very hard to shake off. In this case, seeing a dietician and following a plan can help.

How is the treatment done?

If the weight gain is caused by overeating or by pregnancy, the right course of action to deal with it is to see a dietician at a weight loss clinic. The dietician will start by first taking your weight and noting down any important medical information that might be needed. Then, after getting a general idea of your lifestyle, he or she will chart out a treatment plan for you that will include a diet plan and an exercise plan. Sticking to both these plans can help you lose weight effectively. Since your plan will take into account your body metabolism as well as any other factors that impact weight (such as breastfeeding), you can rely on the plan to work for you. In case they don’t, you can speak to your dietician.

If your weight gain is caused due to a medical condition, such as thyroid, you will have to see a doctor that specializes in that condition. After taking a blood test and a few other preliminary tests to rule out any issues, the doctor will let you know what the right course of treatment is. Usually, this will include medication to combat the hormones in your body causing weight gain and some exercise. It is important to note, however, that with certain problems, the medication cannot help with the weight gain. It might be something that you will have to learn to live with.

Finally, if the weight gain is a side effect of a medicine, you will have to switch that medication for another one and your body will drop the additional weight. It is vital to understand that no matter what the cause, weight loss does not happen overnight. Getting discouraged can be very bad for the morale.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

Anyone who is uncomfortable with their weight and wants to be thinner can seek out weight loss treatments to reach their weight goal. Consulting with professionals about the diet that is the most suited for you is the best way to go about it.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

Often, issues such as body dysmorphic disorder, anorexia, and bulimia cause patients to see their body as something it is not. Such people, though completely skinny (and unhealthily so) see themselves as fat and want to immediately lose the weight. Such people are not eligible for seeking weight loss treatments as it is not in their best interests.

Are there any side effects?

Any change in the diet can lead to certain side effects as your body will take some time to get used to the new diet. The side effects of changing your diet can include things like constipation, diarrhoea, lack of energy, changes in your sleep, and acne.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

Even after you lose the weight and are finished with the treatment, it is important not to revert to your older lifestyle. This means continuing to eat healthy foods, getting exercise on a daily basis, and even staying away from sugary drinks that can contribute to gaining the weight back.

How long does it take to recover?

Most weight gain treatments are meant to go on for a set period of time with a specific goal in mind. You will lose a certain amount of weight over the time period and cannot necessarily expect yourself to become super thin within the first round of treatment (as these things largely depend on your body type and the amount of weight that you need to lose to reach your goal weight). Most weight loss treatments span over a period of two to three months.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

The price of treatment ranges from treatment centre to treatment centre. On an average, it ranges from Rs. 1,500 – Rs. 5,000 per session.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

Weight gain depends largely on the lifestyle that you choose to lead. Therefore, it is important to know that it is not a permanent treatment. As long as you follow the post treatment guidelines with rigour and ensure that you are taking proper care of your body, you can stay within the range of your ideal weight. However, the minute you deviate from the same, you can end up gaining weight all over again.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

You can try out a few home remedies to losing weight. Some of the popular treatments include eating boiled foods and yoghurt for every meal. Drinking healthy beverages such as lemonade and ginger juice can also help you ensure that your digestive system is working well and clearing out all the additional elements from your body. Yoga is a well-known remedy for weight gain, though it has many other benefits.
