Last Updated: Oct 31, 2019

What are Knee Injuries?

The knee is known to be a body part that is most likely to get injured. The injury can be of any kind such as sprains, bruises, fractures, overuse injuries or even meniscus. Knee injuries are mainly caused by twisting or bending forces on the knee or a blow from playing or falling harshly. Knee injuries might also be caused by accidents as well. Having diseases such as osteoporosis can also cause you to have knee injuries as the bones are weak due to this disease. The common symptoms that you can notice from a knee injury are swelling, pain and redness in the affected areas. To detect the cause and the severity of the injury, MRI scans and X Rays are done. A knee injury can happen to anyone thus you can prevent it by proper training, exercises and safe playing and be cautious at all times to avoid falling. Most of the knee injuries are caused by an external force such as bending and twisting of the knee which are anatomically incorrect. If the knee injuries are left untreated then it can lead to complications regarding ligaments and cartilages. Arthritis and other joint diseases makes you more vulnerable to knee injuries.

How is the treatment done?

To begin with the course of the treatment, the medical expert first undergoes a range of tests and physical examinations such as MRI scans and X Rays. Depending on how you have acquired an injury, the course of treatment starts. The doctors check whether the cartilage and the ligaments are affected or not. Fractures commonly involve in plastering the affected area and you are required to take medicines that are rich in Vitamin D. The X Rays and the other scans determine the exact areas that are affected and also helps to evaluate the soft tissues surrounding the knee. The common treatment for any knee injury is splinting and immobilization of the knee. For cases such as severe knee dislocation, surgeries may be necessary. Certain equipments help you to eliminate the pain that is caused when you try to move your knee. Ligament tear may or may not require surgeries but you require therapies and crotches or even wheelchairs in order to immobilize the injured area. Most knee surgeries are done by a procedure called arthroscopy where repairs can be done on your knee without having to make large incisions. Surgeries might sometimes be delayed to avoid complications in the inflammation of the affected area.

Who is eligible for the treatment?

Due to any unfavorable activity if you face pain, swelling, hot sensation, redness, tenderness and difficulty bending your knee then you are eligible for this course for this treatment.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

If you face cardiac problems then your medical expert might avoid you to undergo a surgery and certain medications might be avoided as well.

Are there any side effects?

The side effects of this course of treatment require immobilization of your knee. This causes you difficulty in performing day to day activities and the pain in the affected areas last for a considerable amount of time. You face problems in moving and cannot perform exercises that you might require.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

You should take ample amount of rest and avoid possible injuries in your knee by being cautious and safe playing. You should also have a diet that is rich in Vitamin D and you should also take Vitamin D supplements in order to cure the pain. You should also avoid straining your knee to expect a faster recovery time.

How long does it take to recover?

Any knee injury takes time to recover unless they are merely bruises. A fracture takes a month to recover from with the help of external medical equipments. Bruises and sprains take two weeks to recover which also depends on the severity of the injury.
