My grandfather (age 71) has no motion since 10 days. He was admitted to hospital due to high BP n light stroke. Got discharged 2 days back and at home. He is taking normal food since 3 days but still no motion. What could be the reason? Also he s a ckd patient so the amount of water intake is limited.

Thank you for the query Difficulty in bowel movement is a common problem in aged patients and the problem is aggravated in the background of stroke (since movement is restricted) and CKD (since water intake is limited). It is advisable to give him some mild laxatives like husk or Lactulose in a low dose and increase it if bowel movement doesn't occur (but after talking to his physician). It isn't desirable for him to strain a lot during defecation. Try to include fibres in his diet (keeping the dietary restrictions for CKD in mind). If laxatives do not work, enema may be given to cause some relief. It is important to check his potassium levels and thyroid status as low potassium and hypothyroidism can cause constipation. He should be encouraged to mobilise under supervision. Regards
