Hello Dr. My mother is a 53 year old working lady. She is hypertensive and diabetic. Problem is that she has put on a lot of weight though her sugar and blood pressure are controlled. Presently she is 97 kg and her height is 5'5. Is it advisable for her to join gym? If yes then which exercise? And If no then how to control weight? Please advise.

Gym now is not advisable due to age. She has to go for a minimum 40 minutes brisk walk. More important is her food. It should be controlled. No sugar, fats, maida, fried foods, polished rice. Not more than one or two chapaties and vegetables in lunch or dinner. Eat about 250 gms of salad half an hour before lunch and dinner. Go for just fruit diet once a week. No munching between three meals, BF, Lunch, Dinner. Ensure that her thyroid is in good shape.
