My father was having weight problem. His weight was 113. So we consulted an ayurvedic doctor. He gave some medicines and advised to follow a diet. Now his weight is 92. My father is following this from last 5 months. But from last 3 months he is suffering from different disorder. After few days, twice in a week, he feels a lot of weakness, cold and most importantly depression. He was a very optimistic person but during this attack he totally lost his emotional control. He has never been through such disorder before. Firstly the doctor told that this might be due to vitamin b13 deficiency. But blood reports are normal. Now even the doctor is not able to get the exact cause. Please help us through this. Do this need a psychiatric treatment? Is this due to allergy of the medicines that the ayurvedic doctor gave?

I do not think that his condition is because of some allergy to the medication. He might need some psychological intervention if he gets depressed or if he is losing emotional control totally. If you notice this again, please consult a counsellor who will help you. But more importantly, your father needs lot of motivation. It must be quite tough for him. It is possible that his self esteem has gone down or in those few days he loses patience. It will be very helpful if you make a chart where you mark his weight loss in bright colours and appreciate even the smallest weight loss noticed. Display the chart in his room. Reward him (not food) when he achieves his targets. Ask him to make a plan about what all activities he would like to do when he loses weight. See to it that he has some regular exercise. He needs to feel important so give him responsibilities which he can handle and which he would be interested in. At this stage in life, he has nothing much to look forward to so spend time with daily and talk to him. Talk to him about his past, your future and and the present happenings in life, talk about his friends, his previous achievements etc. Ask his grandchildren to spend time with him. Make him feel worthy of living. All the best.
