Diarrhea is frequent loose stools, while dysentery is blood along with diarrhea. Both occur due to bacterial and viral infection. Acute diarrhea may be self limiting and might not require hospitalization and antibiotics. The main treatment is fluid replacement, and adequate feeding. If stool culture is positive for significant bacteria then antibiotics are started. Dysentery is mostly due to a bacteria called shigella, and it requires immediate treatment with appropriate antibiotics.
