Regards Lybrate user. Pain in the knee or knee muscles can arise from both local and distant regions. Was there any injury or overactivity (like walking too much or standing too long or doing many flight of stairs). If so, then the concern could be at knee or the knee muscles. Stretching knee muscles could help you. 1. To stretch your quadriceps muscles: stand near a wall or a piece of sturdy exercise equipment for support. Grasp your ankle and gently pull your heel up and back until you feel a stretch in the front of your thigh. (ref: mayo clinic) 2. To stretch your hamstring muscles: lie on the floor near the outer corner of a wall or a door frame. Raise your left leg and rest your left heel against the wall. Keep your left knee slightly bent. Gently straighten your left leg until you feel a stretch along the back of your left thigh. Hold for about 30 seconds. Switch legs and repeat. As your flexibility increases, maximize the stretch by gradually scooting yourself closer to the wall or door frame. (ref: mayo clinic) sometimes pain may originate from low back or hip joint but is observed in and around knee joint. Try to check if bending the spine forward or backward fully causes any pain in or around knee and in lying try to move hip by getting knee to chest by pressing behind the thigh. If back or hip movements aggravate your symptom try to consult an orthopaedician or orthopaedic physiotherapist.
