Regards, Lybrate user. The type of pillow used could be one of the contributing factors to neck pain. However, neck pain is caused by structural or functional changes in the neck bones or joints, muscles, or ligaments. One needs to understand that our body complains when the forces on the body go beyond its ability to compensate or adjust and ultimately lead to damage of tissue. When the neck hurts, it may need to be addressed so the structures causing the pain need to be managed to avoid worsening or continued pain in the neck. It is essential for one to maintain a good posture. For the neck, ideal posture is to have the centre of the ear over the body's midline (ideally over the shoulder) if watched from sideways. Most people tend to have what is termed "forward head posture" that means the head is too forward on the neck/body, hence loading the structures of the neck very significantly. In such a scenario, the discs between the vertebrae (bones of the neck) tend to be pressurised significantly and may press on the neighbouring nerves, causing pain. It is essential to focus on erect posture, and you may attempt to ice the back of the neck (with a thin cloth layer between the ice pack and skin) for about 15-20 minutes x 3?4 times/day to reduce the strain on the muscles and to relieve pain. Using a memory foam pillow may support your neck at night but may not correct the cause of the neck pain. It is recommended to consult an orthopaedic physiotherapist for an evaluation if the symptoms continue. Please feel free to reach us for a virtual consult using doctor code drc221.
