My dad is 82 yrs. His liver function test shows alkaline phosphate level 422.1. The normal range should be 80to 306 mg//dl. He is having severe itching in legs, feet, hands, shoulders. His sonography test shows fatty liver. We are pure vegetarian and do not smoke or drink his creatinine level is 1.65. The normal range should be 0.5 - 1.3 mg/dl. Please recommend some medicine for him. Is the itching due to fatty liver and alkaline phosphate? Awaiting your advise and prescription regards gopal iyer.

The fatty liver is not the cause for itching, but the increased alp levels are the main cause. Fatty liver is very common in people and it is nothing to worry about. Even the mild increase in creatinine is of no harm. It indicates the kidney is functioning well. Fatty liver can be reduced by reducing oil content in food. Unless it progresses there is no harm. If patient is mobile activity of at leasy 20 mins a day is also sufficient.

Dear gopal lybrate-user .fatty liver can cause cholestasis that leads to increased alp and itching. You need to use tab udiliv 300 mg twice daily and tab atarax 10 mg twice daily diabetes, hypertension or use of pain killers for any pains can cause increase in serum creatinine. Avoid painkillers and drink plenty of water and pls make sure bp and blood glucose under control this will normalize serum creatinine levels.

Itching mostly due to increased serum alkaline phosphatase. Better stick on a healthy diet with less fat,oil, fried items ect. drinking Butter milk with pinch turmeric,ginger and curry leaves daily is a good option for him.
