My mother, aged 50 yrs, is a schizophrenic patient. The treatment is going on from 3 years and she was fine but 6 months before she stopped taking medicines so now again she is depressed, weak memory, quiet and thinks too much. Is there requirement of any other treatment or only medicines will help?

Schizophrenia is unfortunately a chronic illness that can only be kept under control by medication. By your description it sounds as if your mother has started relapsing again because the medicines have been stopped. Please consult a psychiatrist at the earliest so that she can be restarted on the right medicines. Also it would be good to educate yourself on the illness so that you can monitor her treatment. Very often if treatment is stopped for a long time the same medication becomes less effective. Regular follow up is very important.

Schizophrenia is treatable with medicines but one can't predict that it's curable. It means one can have remission of symptoms with medicines but symptoms can reoccur if proper treatment is not taken. Schizophrenia is a continuous illness and with proper medicines it can be treated. Thanks, hope this helps you. If you have more queries you can ask in follow up. Please write your history of complaints also.

Dear Ankit, Persons with schizophrenia need medicines life long. Only the type of tablets, or the dose or the route (injections, drops and dispersible tablets) may be changed. Relapses are common if you stop the tablets - not immediately. That is what your mother is suffering now. Apart from medicine, getting educated about schizophrenia, tablets effect and side effects, other options of long acting injections, work schedule, social circle, etc will be helpful.
