Ssris are generally considered an option during pregnancy, including escitalopram and sertraline. Potential complications include maternal weight changes and premature birth. Most studies show that ssris aren't associated with birth defects.

Hi lybrate-user overall, the research evidence does not suggest that sertraline increases the chance for birth defects above the background risk (general population). Contrastingly, research has also shown that when depression is left untreated during pregnancy, there could be an increased chance for pregnancy complications. Ultimately the shared decision making should be there in consultation and under the guidance of a psychiatrist. Remember to mention about sertraline to the gynaecologist before delivery and if it is continued, ask him/her not to stop but look for any slight possibility of withdrawal symptoms in the newborn and manage accordingly, though they are usually mild and go off on their own in 2-4 days. I wish you stay happy and healthy!

Dear lybrate-user, no drug is absolutely safe for the foetus. Having said that, you should know the risks that may or may not come up. Both of you should meet the psychiatrist - only with this agenda. She/he will let you know the scientific knowledge. Based on that, both of you can plan for the second child. One needs to assess how severe is the depression and your chances of recurrence of depression. You need therapy to manage depression without sertraline.
