The thyroid gland is a small butterfly gland that plays a pivotal role in regulating the metabolic functions of the body. Located in front of the neck, the thyroid gland is responsible for the production of three important
thyroid hormones namely the Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), T3, and T4. The pituitary gland is involved in the proper regulation and functioning of the thyroid gland. Any abnormalities or disorder of the thyroid
gland can alter its function and the production of the thyroid hormones.

There may be an elevated production of the thyroid hormone- a condition termed as Hyperthyroidism. It may also result in decreased production of thyroid hormones giving rise to Hypothyroidism. It may also give rise to Goitre, characterized by the thyroid gland enlargement. Neglected and untreated, the thyroid problems can result in a myriad of complications including fluctuations in the body weight, menstrual problems, hair loss, infertility, to name a few.

Thyroid problems and Homeopathy

Homeopathy which adopts a holistic approach in treating a disease has been very effective in dealing with thyroid problems. With negligible or zero side effects, the homeopathic treatment does not deal with a problem superficially providing temporary relief. It works at the base level, identifying the chief factors responsible for triggering the problem along with the psychological condition of the patient. In the case of thyroid problems, the treatment aims at eliminating the factors responsible for the problem, thereby restoring the proper functioning of the thyroid glands. Before the treatment, the history of each patient is studied separately and then treated accordingly.

The treatment channelizes on the following points.

  1. The type of thyroid problem (hypo or hyperthyroidism)
  2. The associated psychological condition (stress, anxiety, depression, mood swings).
  3. In cases where the patient exhibits more than one symptom, the doctor may prioritize one symptom over the other.

For example, a person with hypothyroidism may also suffer from hair loss, obesity, and skin dryness. The treatment will then focus on treating the thyroid problem along with the more severe complications or symptoms.

The incidence of people suffering from hypothyroidism has increased rapidly in the past few years. The recommended daily intake of iodine is 150 micrograms. A research suggests that consuming more than 1,700 micrograms of iodine per day may cause goiter, or enlargement of the thyroid gland, according to the Linus Pauling Institute. Iodized salt has replaced the traditional table salt since last few years. So, moderate toxicity is basically marked by elevated levels of thyroid stimulating hormone, or TSH, in the blood which has been the recent scenario.

The thyroid problem (especially hypothyroidism) can be a manifestation of autoimmune reactions (the immune cells start attacking the thyroid glands). Thus, the homeopathic medicines, in this case, will target the immune system and work towards normalizing the functioning of the thyroid gland. It will also work towards balancing the levels of the thyroid hormones naturally.

The treatment is a tedious process and may be time taking, but the treatment is worth the time. In addition to the homeopathic medication, one should also take care of their diet. Enrich your diet with milk, yogurt, fish, meat, eggs, shellfish, berries. Avoid processed and fast foods as well as foods rich in gluten.

Some of the Homeopathic medicines to treat thyroid problems include Kali Carbonicum, Iodum and Fucus Vesiculosus. However, it would not be wise to try self-medication.
