Hi lybrate-user after your delivery it is natural for you to focus all your attention on your newborn baby. But try to look after yourself as well by paying attention to your diet. Eating right can go a long way in helping you get back your strength and energy. After all, your baby needs a strong and healthy mum. And if you are breastfeeding, what you eat passes on to your baby through your milk. So all the more reason to eat well! your family and friends may have a lot of well-meaning advice about the foods you should have while you recover from the delivery. Traditionally, during confinement, women have been given high-calorie food like full cream milk, butter, ghee, dried fruits and sugar. While you do need extra calories if you are breastfeeding, you can get the vital nutrients in a way that doesn't necessarily mean piling on fat as well. We have rounded up a few foods traditionally given during confinement that are rich in minerals and vitamins that you need to recover from childbirth. Read on to find out what traditional confinement ingredients are particularly nutrient-rich and how you can eat them: oats dalia oats are an excellent source of iron, calcium, fibre, carbohydrates and proteins. As oats are high in fibre, they can also help keep constipation at bay. The most common way to have oats is to cook it in a pan and have it with milk, nuts and dried fruit. You can add chopped fruits like bananas (kela), apples (seb) or mango (aam) to increase the nutritional value or make savoury versions like oats upma or khichdi. There are also several quick cooking varieties that you can choose from. Turmeric (haldi) turmeric contains vitamins b6 and c, fibre, potassium, magnesium and manganese. So, it is packed with essential vitamins. Not only is it a standard ingredient in indian cooking, it has been used for centuries to heal external and internal wounds. There is some evidence to suggest that turmeric helps to reduce inflammation. You can choose to add just a little dry ginger powder to your meals. Pulses and lentils (dals) pulses are considered an essential element of a well-balanced diet. They are rich in fibre, protein, vitamins and minerals. Pulses such as moong and masoor are easy to digest and you can have them in the form of halwa or khichdi. A bonus with pulses - they help to prevent fat from collecting in your body! carom seeds (ajwain) it is traditionally believed that ajwain, a good source of thymol, not only soothes pain from gas and indigestion, but also cleanses the uterus. There is not much evidence to support this belief, but thymol is known to have antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic properties. You can make a range of dishes with ajwain from paranthas to halwa, or you could simply add it to your food as an extra seasoning. Some also make it a point to drink ajwain water every day. Finger millet (mandua) finger millet, mandua or ragi is an excellent source of calcium and iron, both of which you need in plenty after giving birth. It can help you regain strength after childbirth, and is a good alternative for mums who are allergic to milk and dairy products. You can use finger millet to prepare dosas, idlis, rotis and halwas. Almonds (badaam) almonds are rich in carbohydrates, fibre, vitamin b12 and e and contain minerals like magnesium, copper, manganese, potassium, calcium and zinc. As there are so many nutrients packed into an almond, it's an ideal food to have while you recover after childbirth. Almonds can be used in many recipes such as badaam milk, sheera, halwa and so on. If you aren't in the mood to cook they make a great snack to munch on! green vegetables green vegetables are a great source of iron, which you will need to help you recuperate. Consider eating spinach (paalak), beans (frans been), lotus stem (kamal kakri), fenugreek (methi) leaves, apple gourd (tinda), pointed gourd (parwal) or other such green seasonal vegetables. Fenugreek (methi) methi seeds are a great source of iron, calcium, vitamins and minerals. They are commonly considered to help prevent back and joint pains though there is little evidence to support this. You can use them while cooking dal, vegetables, pooris or meats. Fenugreek (methi) tea is also a popular drink for breastfeeding mums. Black and white sesame seeds (til) these small, flat seeds are high in calcium, iron, copper, magnesium, and phosphorous. With all these nutrients, sesame seeds or til are good to help replenish the body of essential minerals. They are also popularly considered helpful in regulating bowel movements. In north india, til ke ladoo are popular but there are many other sweets made of til such as til patti, rewri and chikki. Whatever you choose, make sure to have a well balanced diet with all the required nutrients. It's best to run your meal plans past your doctor. And if your doctor feels you need them, she might prescribe vitamin or iron supplements.

Suffering from IBS problem since last more than 12 years. Consult many doctors and they did many tests like endoscopy, colonoscopy but all normal. I feel constipation and gas. Take about 45 mins while going for fresh. Go 2-3 times in day for fresh but have feelings to go more time also but due to time limitations I tolerate it. Gas problem is much much high. Whole day gas pass. If go for fresh then too much gas passed. Feel very shame if some relative come in our house or I go somewhere because big sounds of gas passing come while go to toilet.

Hi, My Mom is 47 years old and Diabetic patient. Her sugar level is under control. For Constipation sometimes she takes Madiphala rasayana with lemon (almost 2 times in a week). This gives her relief. Is it good if diabetic patient's have that syrup?

Laparoscopic Surgery For Gastrointestinal Problems - The Benefits!

Laparoscopy is an advanced surgical technique that is often used to find out and treat any abnormalities or a myriad of medical complications such as an infection, ectopic pregnancy (a condition where the embryo attaches itself to an organ other than the uterus), cyst, fibroids, endometriosis, or pelvic inflammatory disease. Laparoscopy comes in handy in the case of an accident or an injury where it helps in the detection of any damages to the internal organs. There are instances where laparoscopy is even used in a biopsy (to collect the tissue sample).

The technique involves a small incision, often in the belly, through which a lighted tube, called a laparoscope, is inserted into the abdomen to analyze or treat the problem. The technique is quite hassle-free, causing minimum discomfort to the patient. In fact, there are so many associated benefits that more and more people are choosing laparoscopy over other surgical techniques and open surgery.  In this regard, some of the advantages of laparoscopy that deserves a special mention are as follows:

  1. Involves a smaller incision: Most of the surgical procedures, including open surgery, can be quite messy. The laparoscopic technique is simple, minimally invasive, and involves an incision which is 1.2 inch or less.
  2. Quick recovery with lesser chances of an infection: In surgeries involving a large cut, there is a high probability of infection at the incision site, leading to complications and delaying the recovery and healing process. In laparoscopy, with a small incision, chances of an infection or associated complications are almost negligible. An infection-free surgery will heal at a faster rate, ensuring a quick recovery.
  3. The USP of Laparoscopy lies in the fact that the procedure is less painful (since the procedure involves a small cut with reduced loss of blood) as compared to many of the other surgical techniques. In some of the surgeries (including an open surgery), there may be profuse bleeding with the patient even requiring a blood transfusion. Such complications are unheard of in the case of a Laparoscopic surgery. In fact, patients undergoing a laparoscopy are often required to spend a lesser time in the hospital.
  4. Negligible chances of a wrong diagnosis: PCOS or endometriosis can be a contributing factor, triggering infertility in women. In females with fertility issues, an accurate diagnosis can go a long way to treat the condition better. The symptoms and complications associated with PCO or endometriosis can be alleviated if diagnosed early and accurately. Laparoscopy, in the majority of the cases, ensures an accurate diagnosis, making the treatment effective.

Most of the surgical treatments such as an open surgery can leave a huge hole in your pocket. Laparoscopy, though effective, is not very expensive, making it a highly affordable surgical treatment.

Laparoscopic Surgery for Gastrointestinal Problems

The Laparoscopy surgery is often advised to treat a myriad of gastrointestinal problems such as Diverticulitis, Crohn's disease, Familial polyposis, Colorectal Cancer, Ulcerative Colitis. The Laparoscopy surgery may also be helpful in the case of severe constipation, bowel incontinence (a condition where a person fails to control the bowel movements) or a rectal prolapse.

As with most laparoscopic surgeries, the procedure involves the surgeon to make few (usually 3 and more) incisions in the abdomen. With the stomach inflated with carbon dioxide gas (to view the diseased organs better), a laparoscope and the surgical instruments are then placed into the stomach via the incisions to perform the surgery. The different laparoscopic surgeries of the intestine to treat the gastrointestinal disorders include:

  1. Abdominoperineal Resection: In people with cancer affecting the anus or the lower part of the rectum, a surgeon may perform the Abdominoperineal Resection to get rid of the rectum, anus as well as the sigmoid colon. With the removal of the rectum and the anus, the surgeon creates a colostomy (an arrangement to connect the healthy end of the colon to the anterior wall of the abdomen through an incision) to eliminate the waste and the fecal matter out of the body. 
  2. Proctosigmoidectomy: In people suffering from Diverticulitis (an inflammation or infection of the diverticula) and polyps (both cancerous as well nonmalignant growths), a Proctosigmoidectomy may be carried out to excise (complete or partial removal depending on the severity of the case) the affected part of the sigmoid colon or the rectum.
  3. Total abdominal colectomy: This laparoscopic surgery is used to treat conditions of Crohn's disease  (an inflammatory bowel disease that causes abdominal pain and a host of associated symptoms), Ulcerative colitis (severe inflammation of the colon), or Familial polyposis (a condition that triggers the formation of many colon polyps). Total abdominal colectomy involves the surgical removal of the large intestine (usually from lower part of the ileum to the rectum which is then followed by the stitching the end of the ileum and the rectum together).
  4. Right colectomy: As the name suggests, Right Colectomy, also termed as Ileocolectomy involves the surgical removal of the right side of the colon or the large intestine. The excision also includes the end part of the small intestine (attached to the right side of the colon). The Right Colectomy is used to treat cancer, the symptoms associated with Crohn's disease as well as the polyps.
  5. Rectopexy: In the case of a rectal prolapse, where the rectum protrudes out of its original place, a rectopexy goes a long way to stitch the rectum to its original position.
  6. Total proctocolectomy: This is a laparoscopic surgery to remove the large intestine, the rectum and the anus (the anus may or not be removed depending on the severity). People with inflammatory problems of the colon such as Crohn's disease or  Ulcerative colitis benefit immensely from total proctocolectomy. So we have come up with a HEALTHY RECIPE " BESANLADOO" with a AMAZING TWIST.

BesanLadooVeganRecipe:

  • Gluten, grain, dairy, soy free recipe can be nutfree too
  • CookTime: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup chickpea flour
  • 1 Tablespoon shredded coconut
  • 1 Tablespoon oil
  • 2.5 Tablespoons jaggery
  • 1/8 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • generous pinch of nutmeg powder
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 Tablespoon skimmed milk

Method:

1. Add chickpea flour to a pan and Dry roast for 5 minutes on low heat. stir once or twice.

2. Add coconut and oil, Mix well and roast for 15 minutes.

Press down and mix well every 3-4 minutes.

3. Add sugar, salt and spices and mix well. Roast on another 3 minutes.

4. Sprinkle milk on the mixture and mix.

5Take off heat. Let cool for a minute or so until warm to handle.

6. Make balls of the mixture. Press crushed cashew or pistachios or raisins on top.

They say, not everything sweet necessarily leaves a sweet taste. True to that, sugar, whether brown or white, is often considered detrimental to health. Not only does it trigger glucose imbalance in the body, it also heightens the potential of cardiovascular diseases. However, if a comparison is drawn between white and brown sugar, the latter is assumed to be healthier. Brown sugar is essentially granulated sugar with molasses, so it contains greater amount of minerals and consequently is recommended over white sugar. Molasses, being a more natural constituent, reaps more health benefits in comparison to white sugar.

The usual process of manufacturing sugar involves extracting the juice from sugar cane, which then is centrifuged to form finer granules.
