Home Remedies For Gas: Procedure, Recovery, Risk & Complication

What is the remedy about?

It is completely normal and usually harmless for one to have a gassy stomach. Usually, it is expelled either by burping or by flatulence. However, when too much gas collects in your body, it can cause bloating, heartburn and discomfort in your abdomen. This gas builds up in the lower as well as upper digestive tracts. The symptom of gas buildup results from swallowing air while chewing gum, smoking or eating too quickly. Another cause for the buildup of gas is the fermentation of undigested food. Eating fatty, spicy or sugary food, too much starch, certain vegetables, and grains, is another cause of gas buildup in the body. There are numerous ways to get rid of a gas buildup.

Here are a few home remedies that work effectively in reducing the amount of gas in your body:

  • Cumin/jeera water: An effective way to get rid of gas buildup is a home remedy of jeera water. Add a tablespoon of jeera seeds to two cups of water. Boil for five minutes and then strain it. After it is cool enough, drink it twice a day. This aids in the digestion process and prevents the buildup of gas.
  • Warm lemon juice and baking soda or ginger: The acidity of lemon help to break down the food and assists in digestion. This eliminates the problem of bloating and gas build up. To make this remedy, heat a glass of water and squeeze half a lemon into it. Add half a teaspoon of baking soda to this lemon water and drink it twice in a day. It will facilitate the formation of carbon dioxide, which helps aids digestion. You can also add a teaspoon of ginger juice, lemon and honey to warm water and drink this once a day.
  • Asafoetida/heeng water: Asafoetida is also known as heeng. An efficient remedy for treating a gassy stomach is asafoetida or heeng water. To make this remedy take one glass of warm water and add a half teaspoon of heeng to it. Drink it once or twice in a day. It prevents the formation of bacteria in your stomach, which stops the gas from building up.

Are there any side effects?

There are a few side effects of the ingredients used to make these home remedies for a gassy stomach. Although these side effects are rare and only affect few people. Those who are allergic to jeera could experience skin rashes, irritation and rashes. In a few cases, consuming jeera in excess could cause you to develop acidity, nausea and excessive belching. Consuming heeng in excess can lead to side effects such as vomiting, queasiness, irregularities while menstruating, burning sensation while urinating and throat irritation. Lemon has a high level of acidity, which can cause corrosion of the teeth. If you consume too much ginger, it could function as a blood thinner. Therefore, it is advisable for pregnant women, those who are menstruating and those who suffer from blood disorders to avoid consuming ginger. Thus, it is important to practice caution and consume these remedies, only in moderation.

What are the post-remedy guidelines?

Here are a few post remedy guidelines that you should follow while treating a gassy stomach:

  • Avoid eating starchy food like pasta, potatoes, wheat, corn and rice. Also, avoid grains, beans and dairy, which cause a buildup of gas in the body. Fatty or oily food is difficult to digest. Therefore, you should avoid eating these kinds of food in order to prevent a gassy stomach.
  • Drink plenty of water and liquids such as fruit juices or herbal teas. Drinking a glass of warm water every morning stimulates digestion of the food.
  • You should avoid chewing gum, smoking, eating too quickly and talking while eating. These habits cause you to swallow air, which results in a buildup of gas. Therefore, to prevent and treat a gassy stomach, it is advisable to avoid such habits.
  • Stay active and exercise. If you are healthy, your digestion will improve and bowel movements will be regular. This will help you to protect you from having a gassy stomach.
  • If the bloating and gassiness continues for more than three days, you should seek medical consultation.

How long does it take to recover?

These remedies are effective in treating a gassy stomach and bloating. The remedies usually take a day or two to be effective. You could even recover within an hour or two. However, if the gassiness continues, it might be indicative of a serious underlying condition. You should seek consultation from a doctor.

Are the results of the remedy permanent?

A gassy stomach or buildup of gas is generally harmless. A mild case of gas will resolve itself within a day or two. Although, sometimes gas is a symptom of a serious underlying condition. While the very mention of the word Farting makes some of you cringe and cover your nose, you can t ignore the sheer obviousness of the whole process. It is as natural as eating, drinking, sleeping & other daily habits you associate yourself with. Farting occurs mainly when air is trapped within your body. Air might be swallowed during eating or from intestinal gas and chemical reactions in the stomach. In hindsight, farting can be a good thing. Don t think so? Intestinal Gas - How It Can Be Treated?
The production of gas in the body is a natural process as long as it is within normal limits. Whether it makes you burp or causes flatulence, excessive gas can be embarrassing. Gas can also make you uncomfortable and cause bloating. This is simply the buildup of excessive gas in the stomach before it is ready to be released. Here are a few simple tips that can help you prevent the buildup of excessive gas. Avoid eating gaseous foods: Beans, broccoli, milk, cheese and fruits like pears and apples; these are some of the foods to avoid if you suffer from frequent bouts of gaseousness. This is because they contain fiber and sugar that is difficult to digest and creates gas. If you cannot avoid them completely, try steaming them instead of frying or baking them. Some people may also react to certain food combinations such as fruits and proteins by producing gas. Keeping a food diary may help identify such combinations. Drink a glass of water before meals: Drinking water while you are eating can hinder digestion. When water mixes with solid food, it interferes with the way stomach acid breaks down food. Instead, drink a glass of water half an hour before your meals. In this way, the water flushes your system and prepares it for the digestion process. Eat slowly: Grabbing a bite on the go is one of the leading causes of indigestion. When you eat anything, ensure that you chew it properly and do not swallow large bites of food. This prevents air from collecting in your stomach and thus prevents gaseousness. Probiotics: Probiotics boost the production of good gut bacteria that is essential for digestion. Probiotics can also help ease bloating. If you suffer from gas, try including probiotics like yogurt, pickles, kimchi and buttermilk in your diet or get yourself a probiotic supplement. A cup of chamomile tea: Chamomile not only calms the body but can also fight indigestion and gas. A cup of chamomile tea after a heavy meal helps speed up the digestion process. This helps relieve bloating, as the faster the stomach is emptied, the faster gas can move out of the stomach and into the intestines. Fennel, dill, peppermint and ginger can also be used as alternatives to chamomile. Digestive aids: Gas is a fairly common problem faced by a number of people and hence digestive aids are easily available over the counter. Look for medication that contains activated charcoal or digestive enzymes. If gaseousness persists over a long period of time and is not eased by any of these remedies, consult a doctor at once.

Although having gas is common, it can be extremely uncomfortable and embarrassing at times. Gas is eliminated either by burping (belching) or passing it through the rectum (flatulence). Half to two liters is produced normally in adults and may pass up to 14 times a day on an average. But the condition can be really bad for some individuals -one study noted a person who expelled gas 140 times daily, with 70 passages in a period of just four hours. Although every one has gas, but why do some suffer from it more than others? The answer lies either in their biological conditions of their gastro-intestinal tract or in their eating habits. The Gas usually comes from two sources – (a) the air that is swallowed in with food while eating, (b) as a part of normal breakdown of certain undigested foods by harmless bacteria naturally present in the large intestine. Homeopathy can be a great help for those who suffer from this ?too much gas ?problem.
