Uraemic Gastrophy is a term used to describe the upper gastrointestinal signs and histopathological changes associated with uremia, a condition that causes blood to be introduced into a patient?s urine. Patients with Uraemic Gastrophy may have a diverse set of gastrointestinal disorders, including gastrointestinal bleeding, anorexia, heartburn and postprandial fullness. Other uncommon disorders such as esophagitis, gastric angiodysplasia and inflammatory gastric polyps have been described. Underlying contributing factors and mechanisms to the development of uremic gastropathy and the resulting disorders remain unclear. The ultimate treatment for uremia is dialysis. Initiation of dialysis is indicated when signs or symptoms of uremia (eg, nausea, vomiting, volume overload, hyperkalemia, severe acidosis) are present and are not treatable by other medical means. Renal transplantation is the best renal replacement therapy and results in improved survival and quality of life.
