Potatoes are natural food and has been a part of our diet for long. Potatoes by itself will not cause diabetes. Potato is a starchy carbohydrate. When taken in excess in one meal it will give a blood sugar spike and excess will get converted to fats. So if taken in the right proportion it is fine. There are other starchy food as well like rice, wheat, pulse yams etc all your starches need to be managed very well so that you do not overdo it. Sugars and sweets also need to be avoided completely. It should come as a treat once in a while. You need a diet which comprises of whole grains like jowar, bajra, wheat, brown rice, pulses like moong, musoor, bengal gram, lots of vegetables, fruits, eggs, fish, chicken, paneer, healthy oil, nuts and seeds. If you don't have diabetes in your family, if you are eating healthy food and doing regular exercise and maintaining your weight, there are very little chances you will get diabetes. Regular exercise should include cycling/ swimming/ brisk walking / jogging / any other outdoor sports activity for at least 30-40 minutes per day, 6 days per week. Thank you.
