I am 71 years old. My h1b sugar level remains at around 6.8. I was advised to take metmorphine 500sr twice a day. I started with once a day for a month. But as my fasting sugar remained at 125 and pp at around 185 I started taking metformin 500sr twice daily but caused me stomach pain and loose motion in the morning after breakfast. I have started taking vizylac tablet also once a day. It has given me some relief but not fully. I was ask can take vizylac twice day and at what time during the day. Pl. Advice.

Hello, thanks for the query. I have seen the details given. Your glucose levels and hba1c% are quite good considering you are at 71 years. As regards metformin, in some persons, the drug does cause gastrointestinal upsets like irritation, belching, acidity and loose motions. Many a times taking that tablet after food eliminates most of the symptoms. In your case since you have increased the dosage, these side effects may have appeared. If you have been taking the tablet on empty stomach, take it after food, that will reduce the side effects. But if you are already taking it after food and still the problem is occurring, then you may have to reduce the dosage and look for an alternative drug to help improve glucose control.
