I am 25 years old male from allahabad, up. I was seeing a psychiatrist there for a year for ocd. Now I have moved to hyderabad and seeing a different psychiatrist. She has stopped mirtazapine 30 mg which I was taking for an year. Since stopping that medicine a month ago I have not slept for more than 4-5 hours a day. My question is was it a good decision to stop mirtazapine? And how long will it take for these withdrawals to go away? She has also prescribed some benzodiazepines for 1-2 weeks but still i'm unable to sleep.

Dear lybrate-user, mirtazapine is sedating but sleep is not your concern. Ocd is your concern. There are better non sedating tablets for ocd. As you improve on ocd, your sleep will improve. Benzodiazepines for 1- 2 weeks will also help. As long as you don't have day time sleepiness, 4-5 hours of sleep is enough for you.

Mirtazapine is not primary medication for ocd. It is highly sedative, usually the effects take about 4 weeks to wean off, usually it is not abruptly stopped, but gradually reduced. Ssris, and tcas are given for ocd along with benzodiazepines, initially, but mirtazapine is better for sleep than benzos. Anyway give some time for your psychiatrist, if it does not work seek a second opinion. Good luck.

Hi lybrate-user based on the limited information provided by you, it is not clear whether mirtazapine was the first medicine given to you after you were diagnosed with ocd or it was started after trial of other medications. How were you doing/improvement over mirtazapine? It's always best to cross taper a psychotropic medication rather than stopping abruptly which may otherwise lead to drug withdrawal/loss of effect. It's possible for mirtazapine withdrawal to continue up to 6-8 weeks. For the future course of action, I would suggest you to consult and discuss all these issues with your psychiatrist in-person. I wish you get well soon!
