Better to take after food.

Hello, Thanks for the query. Madam, Metformin can be taken either before food or even after food, depends upon your convenience. In some patients if taken on empty stomach, it may cause some gastrointestinal side effects like a feeling of bloating, acidity, loose motions etc. So for them it is advised to be taken after food, where side effects will be less. Later these problems settle down. Since there is no mention of your glucose levels (fasting, PP & HbA1c%) it difficult to comment any further like what dosage may be required or is there any other drug with metformin needed for achieving better control. Plus no information on weight, height, dietary pattern and extent of exercise, which happen to be the major part of diabetes treatment. Thanks.

Dear lybrate-user, try taking it before 15 min before food because the drug works better that way. If it cause symptoms of gastritis such as fullness and burning sensation in the upper abdomen change timing to after food
