My husband has bipolar disorder. He have his good cycle only for two months and depressive cycle with less depression but much more anxiety, concentration lapses. He is having 150 mg of lamotrigine and 200 mg of quetiapine fumarate everyday for the last two years. But his cycle comes back at the end of december and continues till october. Last one month he is taking 2000 iu vitamin d almost every morning and magnesium vit every night. My question is is there any update methodology to identify the exact reason for which he have this cycle? Any vitamin or hormone related deficiency is possible to identify and give him that specific medicine rather giving medicine on trial basis?

He seems to be spending too much time in depression, his lamotrigine dose seems to be less. Also he can be given certain medications to get him off the depressive phase without switch to mania. So kindly discuss these issues with your psychiatrist, if no response, get a second opinion.

Dear Nusrat, i can understand your concern. We, psychiatrists are also researching since many years to find out the exact cause and treat it. But we could find multiple causes rather than one particular reason. We are not giving medicines on trial basis. They are given after many years of research on neurotransmitters and trial on many animals and human volunteers. Only when the benefit is there, we prescribe for your husband. Lamotrigine, quetiapine, vitamin d and magnesium are known to make his mood stable. Updates are there on neuromodulators, followed by rTMS. Again, that may not be the only cause. Let us hope and look forward for some miracle to happen.
