Hi, I am 23 years old and is preparing for government exams so I spend most of my day studying. I sleep for around 7 hours in the night but still I feel sleepy many times when I sit for study. I tried many things from drinking tea and coffee to doing meditation but nothing works much. Earlier I used to get up early in the morning and study but now it seems impossible. I want to know what could be the reason behind this and please suggest me some solution.

Dear lybrate-user, -To keep alert & to be able to concentrate on your studies for a long time, along with sleep you have to concentrate on other important aspects also such as a well balanced diet, proper hydration, time for some sort of exercise regularly, break for 5-10 min after every two to three hours - have a well balanced diet with more of fruits, vegetables, whole grains instead of refined ones & most importantly protein rich foods as they give you continuous energy for prolonged periods & also keep you full - include a protein rich food in each of your meals and also as a snack in-between meals, can have yogurt, a glass of milk with chocolate, a sandwich or a handful of unsalted nuts as a snack in between main meals - have plenty of oral fluids including 8-10 glasses of water for proper hydration or you will feel lethargic and sleepy - do regular exercise like walking for 10-15 min whenever it's convenient for you, also to break the monotony get up every hour or so & walk for 5-10 min revising what you studied & then again sit to study - avoid more than 1-2 cups of tea, coffee per day as it keeps you alert for sometime & then again lethargy sets in - also can destressing by doing yoga, meditation, listening to light music for 10-15 min when you get tired, a walk in fresh air is invigorating & refreshing.
