Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Rice if polished then it gets converted to glucose very rapidly. Raising of blood glucose depends upon the quantity consumed. If one has diabetes then it is necessary to take a balanced and restricted diet. Total caloric intake has to be based on ideal body weight, extent of daily exercise and whether there is a need for weight loss. Increasing the intake of green leafy vegetables, salads and fruits is one way to reduce rise in glucose. Plus avoid sweets, deep fried foods, pastries, bakery items, foods made from maida, junk foods and colas. Always use whole grain flour for chapati and roti. Increase the intake of pulses. Thanks.

You have to understand that anything we eat is metabolised and converted into energy and the excess amount of calories is stored into different forms for future requirement. In case of Diabetes, since there is less insulin secreted or almost no insulin produced, the sugar produced in the body is not properly used up (in the absence or deficiency of insulin ). The sugar levels thus increase in the blood above the normal levels. High glucose levels start damaging at cellular and tissue levels and create complications in the long run. So, one can eat foods that release sugar slowly (low GI food) and thereby avoid the upsurge of glucose levels suddenly. Avoid or eat in moderation processed and packeged food and beverages. Eat a wholesome meal which is nutritious and balanced (calories required by you would depend upon the activity level and ideal weight ). Include fruits and vegetables everyday as they are good source of fibre and nutrients. (Have unpolished or organic food items if possible ). You can have rice ot rice products also or any natural product keeping in mind the nutritional value and your total calorie requirements in the whole day. Take the advise of a nutritionist who can help you customise your diet (a variety of food which is also tasty) based on your traditional food habits.
