I am a diabetic type 2 patient since last 8 years and on regular medicine. Now I am fond of gym and focusing on body building. I am advised to take black coffee before workout as energy booster. But I have read on internet that it is harmful and increase blood glucose level especially post meals. Pls help and confirm that can I have coffee in morning before workout after having some carbs? Hope it will not effect sugar level and also not insulin resistant. Pls help and guide.

exercise for keeping fit and in shape is different thing and professional bodybuilding is different. if you are not professional bodybuilder please don't worry and don't get in hurry to shape up fast. just wait and depend upon normal food behaviour suitable for you.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. There are a few studies which do show that black coffee has some benefit in reducing blood glucose. However, there are no proper clinical studies. Taking coffee in the morning may stimulate the brain due to caffeine in it. However, I do not really see any benefit in that approach. If need be you may take a fruit or two in the morning before a strenuous work out. Thanks.
