Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Type 2 DM is a familial disease. Hence it tends to run in the family. Why you have got it so early in life is a difficult question to answer. Probably there is no real answer. For T2 diabetes apart from family history, other factors are also very important like being over weight (which you are not), secondly being physically inactive (not doing enough exercise), plus taking a lot of junk foods, colas, bakery items and fructose corn syrup containing foods and taking deep fried foods. Best treatment is usually taking Insulin injections. But most often T2 DM can be well controlled with oral antidiabetic drugs. Plus there are plenty of drugs available today. Another important thing to remember is that diabetes can only be controlled effectively, with a person living absolutely normal life. But there is NO CURE. Treatment has to be for lifetime. Ideally in a well controlled diabetic person fasting blood glucose should be <100 mg, PP 150 to 160 mg & HbA1c%<6.8. A proper balanced diet should be taken, giving exact calories based on your ideal body weight. Plus exercise regularly for at least 1 hour a day. Take a good deal of green leafy vegetables and salads. Refrain from alcohol and smoking. These are few other things to be kept in mind. If you have any doubts please come back. Thanks.
