There are bones within the nose called turbinates whose function is to streamline the air entering our nose and they guard the openings of air pockets in our skull called sinuses. These sinuses are ventilated with air which can wash away any secretions collected in it when we breath out through our nose. During infection, the lining of the turbinates gets inflamed obstructing the openings of the sinuses causing the classical symptoms of sinusitis like headache, heaviness of face, running nose. For the first few times of such infection, the lining will get back to normal with home remedies or medications and the opening becomes normal. But repeated attacks cause the turbinate to swell up into an air filled one a.k.a. Bulla ethmoidalis causing permanent obstruction to the opening and repeated infection. In such a case, a fess (functional endoscopic sinus surgery) is advisable.
