My brother is 24 years old and he is severe epileptic. He has been diagnosed for fits since childhood. In nov 2017 we took him to sree chitra hospital in kerala for treatment where he was prescribed oxetol 600, encorate chrono 500, frisium 10 mg, levipil 750 mg whose dose is gradually decreasing by 250 mg every month and will stop after may and lametac 100 whose dose will start decreasing by 50 mg from may every month. Since november he os having no fits but since then he is on bed all the time and feeling acute dizziness. He is not able to move on his own without support. All the time he is feeling sleepy. I want to know that is this normal or not and for how long he will have to bear this.

Thanks for the querry. Anti epileptics control Epilepsy and do not completely cure, Regularity in taking medication is the answer. Is he decreasing medication on his own or on the advise of Sree Chitra doctors, after epilepsy is controlled on a particular medication (Some times single or some times more than one) it should be taken for 4 years gradually tapered and in a few it should be taken still longer periods, If not treated Epilepsy leads to certain Psychiatric issues and he is already showing some. Please get him completely evaluated by a Neurologist and also a Psychiatrist, if you are living in and around Hyderabad you can consult me after 15th April.

Hello lybrate-user, antiepileptic medication like encorate chrono can cause sedation. Its better to show to your doctor adjusting the dosage, keeping antiepileptic causing sedation at night time, maintaining proper hydration may resolve the issue. Do not decrease the dose without proper guidance from your doctor. Best wishes.
