Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) is a neuropathic condition that affects the trigeminal nerves. These nerves are responsible for body sensations. Trigeminal neuralgia is also called as Tic douloureux. Because of its association with pain which seems uncontrollable and incurable, this disease is generally known as ‘the suicide disease’. If the person has this disorder, even slight action on the face such as putting on makeup or brushing the teeth may produce a jolt of excruciating pain. This pain also spreads around the eye, ear, scalp, nose, forehead, lips, jaw or teeth, etc. It generally affects people over 50 and is more common in women than men.

Causes of Trigeminal Neuralgia -

Multiple tumors, sclerosis, and traumatic events or injuries can cause trigeminal neuralgia, but generally, it is affected by blood vessels pressing on the trigeminal nerve root.

Symptoms of Trigeminal Neuralgia -

In some circumstances, it is idiopathic (without any obvious effect). However, the symptoms of trigeminal neuralgia include:

  • Attacks that become more intense and frequent over time

  • Pain spreads in a wider pattern or focused in one spot

  • Episodes of extreme jabbing or shooting pain that feels like an electric shock

  • Constant burning feeling

  • Episodes of more than a few attacks lasting weeks, months, or longer

  • Spontaneous attacks of pain

  • Attacks or extreme pain produced by activities like chewing, touching the face, speaking, or brushing teeth

  • Pain in areas addressed by the trigeminal nerve comprising the jaw, teeth, cheek, lips, gums, forehead, and eye

  • Sessions of pain for a few seconds or for several minutes.

A number of activities can trigger the pain of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) including talking, encountering a breeze, putting on makeup, smiling, washing the face, brushing the teeth, touching the face, drinking, eating, shaving, etc.

Homeopathy and Trigeminal Neuralgia -

Homeopathy is one of the most effective ways of conventional medicine for TN. Most importantly, homeopathic medicines are regarded as safe medicine without any side-effects. They help in controlling and managing frequent pain.

Homeopathic treatment depends upon the overall symptoms and causes of the problem in every individual case. It controls the pain with medicines and therapies only and avoids the chances of surgery. The treatment of homeopathy suggests some tips through which a patient can control and manage the trigeminal neuralgia condition. These tips include:

  • Eating foods that are low in saturated fat.

  • Including ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, black pepper, and cayenne pepper because they trigger stimulation in the mouth which activates trigeminal neuralgia.

  • Including yellow, green, and orange vegetables like spinach, beans, broccoli, asparagus, tapioca, dried or cooked cherries, pear and prune, and cranberries in the diet.

  • Avoiding mint, spices, and chilies.

  • Avoiding foods that are acidic like pickles, vinegar, and tomatoes.

  • Avoiding high-arginine foods including chocolates, nuts, caffeine, artificial sweeteners, etc.

  • Following up with the homeopathic doctor regularly.

Takeaway -

Homeopathy treats trigeminal neuralgia (TN) effectively without any side effects, however, it is always advisable to consult a homeopathic practitioner before opting for any of the above tips.
