Skin Polishing Treatment: Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

Last Updated: Apr 25, 2024

What is the treatment?

You can go for skin polishing treatment if you want your skin to become smoother, softer and brighter. The most common types of skin exfoliation are microdermabrasion and chemical peels. Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic surgery that improves uneven skin, fine lines and age spots. There are at-home kits available to perform the process yourself. However, it is always better to consult a dermatologist as your kit will not be as effective as a professional’s machine. Chemical peeling minimises the appearance of different spots or scars present on your skin by the use of certain chemicals.

How is the treatment done?

Microdermabrasion makes the skin smooth and clean by exfoliating the skin and unclogging the pores. A small device will be used to blast crystals onto your skin. These crystals will polish your skin’s surface before being removed, by a vacuum tube, along with dead skin cells. It allows the more radiant and fresher skin to resurface. Chemical peeling involves applying high potency acids on skin. Applying these acids removes the surface scars and lessens the appearance of deeper scars. It improves the appearance of skin. There are three kinds of chemical peels. The most used one is the deep peel that uses phenol and gets deeper into the skin. It is recommended for treating blemishes, wrinkles or scars. Superficial peel improves discoloration associated with rough or dry skin caused due to sun damage. Medium peel is mostly used for anti ageing treatments because of the glycolic acid present in this peel. Ensure that you consult an experienced dermatologist and check for skin allergies that you live through. The dermatologist will keep your skin composition in mind before applying any strong ointment or gel during the treatment you choose to have.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

You can get skin polishing treatment if you feel that your skin has become dull from all the environmental pollution and dirt. If you have damaged skin, age spots, fine lines and uneven skin, you should go for microdermabrasion. Chemical peels can benefit people suffering from acne scars or deep wrinkles.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

If you are undergoing some other medical treatment, skin spots may occur due to the side effects of those medications. Make sure you are through with that treatment before going for any skin polishing treatment.

Are there any side effects?

You may experience redness in your skin for some time but it goes away in a few hours. Do not get skin polishing done on the day you have to attend an event or occasion. It is always wise to get it done a day or two in advance.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

You must follow your doctor’s instructions well after the treatment is over. Try your best not to expose your skin to direct sunlight. If stepping out in the sun is unavoidable, apply a large amount sunscreen lotion with an SPF of at least 15. Make appointments with your dermatologist and get at least 4 sessions of skin polishing treatment done to see visible results.

How long does it take to recover?

One session of microdermabrasion process may take between 20 and 30 minutes. Depending on your skin type and severity of condition, you may have to go for 6 to 12 sessions of microdermabrasion. You can resume your daily activities immediately after the session.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

Cost of one session of microdermabrasion may be ₹1500 - ₹3000 depending on the area of skin covered. Cost of chemical peeling may vary greatly depending on the type of peel you choose and the area to be treated.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

The results of the treatment are permanent if you take good care of your skin. You must avoid direct sunlight as much as you can. Keep your skin away from dirt and pollution by cleaning it from time to time.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

You can try at home microdermabrasion kits, homemade skin peels (consisting of things like olive oil, turmeric and honey), sugar or fruit scrubs etc. to avoid your skin from getting dull. You must maintain a healthy skin by consuming food items like fatty fish, walnuts, broccoli, sweet potatoes, avocadoes etc. Avoid smoking tobacco and consuming alcohol.
