Home Remedies For Oral Thrush: Procedure, Recovery, Risk & Complication

What is the remedy about?

Oral thrush is a kind of yeast infection that tends to develop inside the mouth and on your tongue. The symptoms include a feeling of soreness, redness, having difficulty in swallowing and failing to get the taste. Repeated occurrence of oral thrust is an indication of immune deficiency. There are some simple home remedies that can help to control the infection:

  • Salt is considered to be the best option for treating an oral thrush. It not only relieves you from the symptoms, but also manages to create a difficult environment for the fungus. Take half a spoon of salt and mix it in lukewarm water. Use this solution to gargle twice or thrice a day on a regular basis. You can also sprinkle a bit of salt on your tongue and rub it with your finger, and rinse it with water afterwards.
  • Yoghurt is another remedy for treating oral thrush. However, you need the unsweetened and plain yoghurt for this purpose. You can have 2 to 3 cups of yoghurt regularly for a few weeks or rub some of it inside your mouth and tongue. Wash it off with warm water after 10-12 minutes.
  • Apple cider vinegar comprises of enzymes that helps to boost the immune system, which eventually fights against the infection. Add a small amount of apple cider vinegar and a pinch of salt in a cup of warm water. Rinse your mouth with this solution many times in a day.
  • Tea tree oil contains certain antifungal properties that can effectively control the overgrowth of the yeast that causes the infection. Add 4 drops of the tea tree oil in a cup of warm water and gargle with the solution twice a day.
  • Cinnamon, with its powerful antifungal and anti- parasitic properties, is another effective remedy for treating oral thrush. Drink cinnamon tea twice in a day on a regular basis.
  • The anti-fungal properties present in garlic can help in reducing your oral thrust and boost your immunity. Chew 2 or 3 garlic cloves regularly.

Are there any side effects?

The possible side effects of these home remedies can be:

  • Yoghurt contains bacteria that can cause illness in people who have a weak immune system. For example, for people diagnosed with HIV or those who have recently undergone an organ transplant; having yoghurt on a daily basis may be harmful.
  • If you are using tea tree oil for treating your oral thrush, ensure that you only gargle with it and not ingest it, as there can be possible side effects.
  • It is not recommended for pregnant women to have cinnamon. Also, excessive amounts of it can cause problems in people who have a bad liver condition. If you are under medication for diabetes, blood-thinning or heart problems, there is a possibility that cinnamon can interact with them.
  • Consuming raw garlic in large amounts can cause nausea, vomiting, gas, diarrhea, body odour and bad breath.

What are the post-remedy guidelines?

The post remedy guidelines include:

  • Rinse your mouth thoroughly, especially after meals.
  • Ensure that you brush your teeth and floss at least twice a day.
  • Consider having foods that can be swallowed without much difficulty.
  • If you wear dentures, make sure that they are cleaned on a regular basis.
  • Limit the intake of foods that contain sugar and yeast, as it can encourages the growth of fungus that causes oral thrush.
  • Try drinking liquids that are cold, like iced tea or water.
  • Quit smoking.
  • How long does it take to recover?

    Normally, an oral thrush lasts for 2 weeks. In some cases, it may last for several weeks. Home remedies are generally quite effective in treating oral thrush. However, if you notice no sign of improvement after practicing the home remedies, you may have to seek medical assistance and consult a doctor.

Appendectomy - Long Term Complications Associated With It!
What is an Appendectomy? An appendectomy (which is sometimes referred to appendicectomy ) is the surgical elimination of the organ known as the appendix. Appendectomy is mostly performed as an emergency surgical procedure, when patients suffer from appendicitis. How is Appendectomy Performed? Appendectomy can be performed both as an open operation as well as laparoscopically. An appendectomy is most often performed laparoscopically, if the diagnosis is in doubt, or if the patients feel that they need to hide their telltale surgical scars near their umbilicus or in the pubic hair line. However, although laparoscopic appendectomy has its cosmetic advantages, and its recovery time is a little quicker, this procedure is more expensive than conventional open surgery. Conventional Open Appendectomy- In the conventional open surgery, the surgeon makes an incision which is less than 3 inches in length in the lower right section of the abdomen. Once the infected appendix is identified, the surgeon separates the infected appendix from its surrounding tissues and removes it surgically from the cecum (an intraperitoneal pouch that forms the junction of the small and large intestine). After that, the cecum is closed and is returned back into the abdomen. In the end, the muscle layers and the skin are sewn together and the incision is closed. Laparoscopic Appendectomy (LA)- While performing appendectomy laparoscopically, which is also known as LA, four incisions of 1 inch in length are made in the abdomen. One incision is made near the umbilicus, while another one is made in an appropriate region between the umbilicus and the pubis. The other two incisions, which are even smaller in size, are made in the right side of the lower abdomen. The surgeon then passes the camera and special laparoscopy instruments through these openings and after identifying, frees the appendix from its surrounding tissues. Next, the appendix is removed from the cecum and the site of its former attachment is sewed. The infected appendix is removed from the body of the patient through any one of the two 1 inch incisions. In the end, the laparoscopic instruments are removed and the incisions are sutured and closed. During this whole procedure, the intraperitoneal space is filled with medical grade carbon dioxide gas, to inflate the abdomen, which is released after the surgery. Recovery Time For Appendectomy- The recovery time for appendectomy depends on and varies with the type of procedure and anesthesia used during the surgery. While laparoscopic appendectomy can be done on an outpatient basis so that the patients can recover back at home, an open surgical procedure will require an overnight or even longer hospital stay. Normally patients after appendectomy can resume their normal daily activities within a few days. However, for full recovery, it may take four to six weeks. Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities during this period of time. Risk and Long Term Consequences of Removing the Appendix- While wound infections are the most common complications of this surgery, formation of an abscess in the area of the surgical incision and also in the area close to the removed appendix has also been noticed as an aftermath of appendectomy. Other rare complications may include lack of intestinal peristalsis (ileus), gangrene of the bowel, injuries to the internal organs and infections in the peritoneal cavity (peritonitis). Major long-term consequences of appendectomy include increased risks of bowel obstruction, stump appendicitis (infection in the retained portion of the appendix still stuck with the cecum) and development of incisional hernia at the site of the scar.

Quite aggressive and can cause harm mother and destroy household things and sometimes behaving doing personal activity like masturbation without proper closing the doors and sleeping abnormally for long hours. May be he's addicted to drugs also which i'm not sure. He is not ready to consult a doctor. Please suggest how we can overcome this issue. We already did his counselling n he behaves normally with counsellor due to which we got no results of that.

Dear lybrate-user, it is often said that an empty mind is a devil's workshop. Your younger brother in involving himself in more of these activities as his energies are not goal directed. The aggressiveness, the substance abuse, masturbation etc are just ways in which he is expressing his pent up energies, which is a basic need. In fact using substances is a sign of escaping responsibilities. He is a 25 year guy. The main concern is why isn't he involved in any job, or business. One reason could be that he is staying stuck because he is being fed, given money and allowed to have his ways at home, thus not requiring him to take up any responsibilities. The mother and other significant family members need to stop over pampering him, and least of all be afraid of his threats or anger. What needs to be done is eventually dig into the reasons why he doesn't study or work, probably because of comparisons or some failures as student, work or lack in confidence, that is being covered by aggressiveness in him.
