Erectile Dysfunction - Treatment, Procedure And Side Effects

What is the treatment?

When a male faces problems with getting or continuing to keep an erection during sexual intercourse, he may be suffering from erectile dysfunction (ED). ED may result because of an underlying health issue such as heart disease, thus the problem should be discussed with a doctor as soon as possible.

As per the causes and extent of the problem the doctor will recommend a type of treatment which may include oral medication, penis pumps, penile implantation and even surgery. Psychological counseling is recommended to men who are suffering from stress and anxiety. Low self-esteem may also lead to ED. Counseling effectively helps men solve their mental health issues and overcome ED.

Oral medication may include drugs like Viagra, Cialis, Stendra, and Levitra, which enhance the nitric oxide effect in the body, thus improving blood flow in the penis. The dosage of the medicines will vary from individual to individual. These medicines do not aid in immediate erection, as they aren’t aphrodisiacs. Some form of sexual stimulation is necessary to trigger the release of nitric oxide and cause an erection.

Self-injections and Muse therapy, as well as testosterone replacement options, can also be suggested by doctors.

How is the treatment done?

In the case of Muse therapy, a special applicator is used to insert a small alprostadil suppository into the penile urethra. This should be inserted into the penis before intercourse. It takes about 10 minutes for the medicine to do its work and the erection may last from 30 minutes to 60 minutes.

Testosterone replacement treatment is recommended for men who suffer from ED because of low levels of testosterone. The replacement of testosterone is generally done through injection or application of a patch. It may also be taken in gel or gum form.

A penis pump, which is also known as a vacuum erection device is situated just over the penis. The hollow tube is generally battery powered or hand powered. Once the pump is placed it removes the air from inside the device, creating a vacuum that triggers blood flow to the penis resulting in an erection. A tension ring is then placed at the penis base to keep the erection in place. The ring should be removed once intercourse is done.

Penile implantation is done through a surgical procedure in which the implants are located on two sides of a man’s penis. The implants may either be inflatable rods or semi-rigid rods. This form of treatment is very rare and is done only after other types of ED treatment have failed.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

Erectile dysfunction can affect men at any age. Usually, older men tend to face this problem more than younger men. Men of all age can seek treatment for ED.

The treatment for ED generally depends on the diagnosis and will vary from individual to individual.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

Depending on the health and certain other factors a doctor will advise a certain form of treatment to cure ED. While a type of treatment like oral medication may work for one patient, another may require a surgery.

Are there any side effects?

Treatment for ED is safe, but there may be few side effects such as:

  • Oral medication can lead to headaches, backache, changes in vision and stomach problems.
  • Self-injections can result in pain around the area where the needle is injected, bleeding and development of fibrous tissue around the injected area.
  • Side effects of muse therapy include slight urethral bleeding, pain and fibrous tissue formation.
  • Surgery as a treatment for ED is very rare and can lead to severe complications like infection.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

Post-treatment patients generally are asked to make changes to their lifestyle. This includes a balanced diet and regular exercise. They are advised to quit smoking and reduce intake of alcohol.

How long does it take to recover?

Treatment for ED is generally in the form of oral medication which needs to be taken according to prescribed guidelines. Recovery after penile surgery takes about 2 to 4 weeks. One can resume sexual activity in about 6 weeks’ time.

In the case of ED due to stress or anxiety, individuals seek psychotherapy and recovery as and when they distress and learn to relax.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

The cost of treating ED varies upon the kind of treatment one is seeking. It generally ranges from Rs 25,000 to 40,000 and even more in some cases.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

While effects of surgery and penile implants may be permanent, oral medication needs to be taken as and when a male who suffers from ED wants to indulge in intercourse.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

A number of alternative treatment for ED are also available. These include:

  • Nutritional supplements
  • Herbal medication
  • Acupuncture
  • Group therapy
Safety: High Effectiveness: High Timeliness: Low Relative Risk: Low Side Effects: Low Recovery Time: Medium Price Range: Rs. 25000 - Rs. 40000

Erectile Dysfunction - Factors That Put You At Risk!

If a survey is done for the most common male sexual problem, the outcome would be erectile dysfunction. Commonly referred to as ED, it is a major problem for the male but it can be treated in simple ways.
By definition, ED is the repeated inability of a male to achieve and/or maintain an erection for a healthy and satisfying sexual relationship. The key word here is “repeated” as a quicker erection or softer erection is very common in many men, which could be a one-off instance and caused by transient factors like stress or lack of sleep. When this happens repeatedly, then it needs attention.

Symtoms: Erectile dysfunction is when:

  1. Erection is too soft, not allowing for sufficient penetration and prolonged intercourse
  2. Erection duration is very short
  3. There is difficulty in arousal

Risk factors: ED has been noted to be commonly seen in people, who have following behaviours:

  1. Smoking
  2. Obesity
  3. Advanced age (>60 years)
  4. Excessive alcohol abuse
  5. Sedentary lifestyle with no exercise
  6. History of diabetes
  7. Hypertension
  8. Atherosclerosis
  9. History of groin surgical procedures for prostate, bladder, etc.

Causes: ED has both physiological and psychological reasons.

  • Most common psychological reasons are strained relationships, performance anxiety, and other life stressors.
  • Physical causes include reduced hormone levels and other chronic medical conditions like obesity, diabetes, and hypertension.

Diagnosis: While ED is easy to diagnose medically, the truth is that not many would be forthcoming for a diagnosis. Given that this issue could be a jolt to the “manhood,” it is often not brought out in the open for discussion. Once that is done, the following steps can help in diagnosis.

  1. Medical history and specifically sexual history
  2. Check for genital abnormalities
  3. Blood testosterone levels
  4. Other vitals including blood pressure, sugar, and cholesterol levels to identify overall health

  1. Sexual counseling involving the couple. Once they open up and get comfortable, the problem vanishes. Performance anxiety which is a major cause is taken care of, and ED is no longer an issue. Aligning the couple’s expectations also is very essential.
  2. Hormone supplements, both locally applied and taken into the system, help to a great extent
  3. Lifestyle changes like quitting smoking, moderating alcohol abuse, healthy eating habits, and moving away from sedentary lifestyle helps treat ED
  4. Medicines like Viagra are very useful for occasional cases of erectile dysfunction

As a last resort, there are advanced options like pumps, vacuum devices, implants, and surgical options, and implants. These are often not required, as in most cases, sexual counseling and hormone therapy help in managing ED. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can ask a free question.

Causes and Role of Counselling in Treating Diabetes and Erectile Dysfunction

Causes and Role of Counselling in Treating Diabetes and Erectile Dysfunction

Diabetic men usually are prone to suffering from erectile dysfunction, i.e., they are unable to maintain an erection while having sex. If you are suffering from diabetes for a long time, your nerves and blood vessel might get damaged. That will cause you to suffer from erectile dysfunction. Almost 35% to 75% diabetic men suffer from erectile dysfunction. This situation becomes more serious with age.

Causes: It involves various factors like impairment in the nerves, blood vessels, and also cause problems in proper muscle functioning. You need healthy blood vessels, nerves, as well as healthy male hormones and sexual desire to get an erection. Diabetes damages the nerves and blood vessels responsible for an erection. So even if you have the required amount of hormones and the desire, you might not be able to get a proper erection.

Treatment: If you are suffering from diabetes, and have a condition of erectile dysfunction, then the most common treatment for you is Sildenafil. Other medications, which you can take are tadalafil, avanafil, and vardenafil. But keep in mind that if you have any heart problems, then you should refrain from taking any of these medicines as they will further complicate situations for you. Consult your doctor in this case to know which will be the best treatment for you to cure erectile dysfunction. Other treatment methods are as follows:

  1. Intracavernous injection therapy
  2. Vacuum erection devices
  3. Venous constriction device
  4. Intraurethral therapy
  5. Penile prostheses

The dosage of these medicines depends upon weight of the patient as well as presence or absence of other co-morbid conditions like hypertension, dyslipidemia, cardiac problems, kidney/liver diseases, etc. Prescription of these medicines also depends on the other medications that the patient is taking as these ED medicines have a lot of adverse drug-interactions. Hence, one must always consult a doctor before starting these medications.

The Role of Counselling for Treating Erectile Dysfunction:

Erectile dysfunction can be caused by psychological factors and once a man experiences erectile dysfunction it can have a major impact on their emotional well-being. A man may feel a loss of manhood, a loss of confidence, low self-esteem, angry and depressed and it may also affect his relationship or sexual encounters. Therefore, counselling is a crucial part of treatment in order to address these issues.
Does psychosexual counselling work?

Psychosexual counselling is most effective when a man's sexual partner is willing to be part of the treatment. Studies have shown that for men with stress-related ED, when the partner is involved in the therapy, the problem is resolved 50%-70% of the time. When the man must go through counselling alone, the results are less successful.

Psychosexual counselling is unlikely to work if a man drops out of treatment after just one or two sessions.

Sometimes, several sessions of psychosexual counselling can be helpful if a man is due to receive medical or surgical treatment for ED. A counsellor can help guide a couple towards agreeing on treatment, or help them improve their sexual communication and lovemaking skills. A man may benefit from counselling on his own regarding how to talk to his partner about penile injections or a vacuum constriction device, which are both treatments for ED. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

Sleep is the most important aspect for a healthy beign, but for kids it is of utmost priority. Lack of sleep can often have a negative impact on the brain funtioning of kids along with accidents. Listed below are the major sleep disorders in children along with their causative factors:

1. Sleepwalking: It is not uncommon for children under the age of 10 to sleep walk. Despite being harmless on its own, the effects of sleep walking can be dangerous such as stepping outdoors or hurting themselves during sleep. If the child runs into objects while sleep walking, they might wake up and hence further worsen the situation.

3. Obstructive sleep apneaSnoring might be the result of improper respiration while sleeping and while it isn’t a cause of worry, regular snoring might lead to insufficient oxygen during sleep, thus making shut eye a challenge. It might be hereditary or the result of a deviated nasal septum or blocked nose. The snoring might hamper the quality of sleep.

4. BedwettingThis is something most children experience, but usually grow out of by the time they turn six. It doesn’t need to be a cause of concern unless the frequency doesn’t reduce over time and more than two instances of bedwetting take place in a week.
5. Insomnia in children: It can be due to a host of factors and coping with changes to their normal lifestyle is one of the biggest triggers. Mental disorders such as anxiety and stress due to a variety of reasons (like the death of a loved one) may also be the cause of distress and lead to troubled or incomplete sleep.
6. Excessive daytime sleepinessExcess naps throughout the day, always feeling lethargic or experiencing trouble waking up in the morning may be symptomatic of EDS. It isn’t uncommon in adults either wherein despite apparent proper sleep; energy levels seem to be low throughout the day. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

Common Infections: A large portion of these genital tract diseases occurs because of infections. Diseases can influence distinctive areas of the male regenerative tract, for example, the testis, epididymis and male sex organs and glands. Urogenital diseases at various levels of their advancement, development and transport can affect the sperms themselves in this manner. Among the most widely recognized microorganisms required for sexually transmitted diseases, meddling with male fertility are Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhea.

Symptoms: If the following symptoms of a genital tract infection are ignored, it can definitely lead to the person being infertile in some stage of life or immediately. These are as follows:

The signs and symptoms in males are

  1. Changes in the way you discharge
  2. Bleeding while urinating or discharge
  3. Thick white, yellow or green release from the tip of the penis along with pain in urethra or pain while urinating
  4. A hard but painless sore on the penis along with swelling of the lymph hubs in the crotch
  5. Pain or uneasiness while urinating or discharge from the urethra

  7. Light bleeding after intercourse
  8. Warts in the vagina

Regular check-ups and visits to the gynecologist are very essential. One should always keep the partner updated about their sexual health problems to practice a healthy and honest relationship and to avoid further contagious infections from occurring.

Its quite natural to face such problem in initial phase, you should spend more time on foreplay and try to enjoy it rather than jumping to intercourse, with time and co-operation of partner things will get better.

Dear user. Please don’t panic. You must understand ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION. There is nothing called erectile dysfunction while having masturbation. Loosing erection in the initial stages of sex or not having erection at all or having late erection or lack of sexual desire are called erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction can be a sign of a physical or psychological condition. It can cause stress, relationship strain, and low self-confidence. I suggest sex therapy.

Erectile Dysfunction
Here are types, causes and treatments of erectile dysfunction.

Hello viewers I am doctor Rahul Reddy. I am a microsurgical andrologist. I deal with the erectile dysfunction and male infertility and all men's problems. Today let us discuss about erectile dysfunction which is very common in all age groups.

So when there is a erectile dysfunction people get panic they visit sort of sexologists unqualified cracks and they get worried. See erectile dysfunction is of four types one the first one is psychological and second one is hormonal erectile dysfunction and third one is Vasogenie erectile dysfunction the fourth one is a neurological erectile dysfunction. So the first two like psychological erectile dysfunction and hormonal erectile dysfunction these are very easy to treat and it can be diagnosed by any urologist. Psychological erectile dysfunction is due to fear our performance anxiety, when a male tries to perform or how intercourse and if he fails he carries this fear to the next intercourse. Instead of going with excitement he is going with fear so obviously he fails. So if this gets carried away then he can never perform.

So most of the young males are they come to us they come to me with this these kind of problems. Generally these are the patients where we put them on medications to give them confidence. Once they perform normally with these medications they get confidence then after that they don't have to use this medications on a regular basis. Coming to second type of erectile dysfunction it is hormonal erectile dysfunction this is commonly seen in various of in young patient and as well as in old patients. Here when we talk about hormones the first hormone we discuss is testosterone. So why this hormone is on the lower side. Commonly the first common cause is lack of exercise.

Second one is stress at work. Third one is sedentary lifestyle and fourth one is lack of proper sleep. The twelve to five is a peak time for Hormone production. So if you are not in deep sleep in this time, then your Hormone production is not normal. Regularly work for 30 minutes a day and eat healthy food avoid junk food and third one you have to avoid anxiety and stress and fourth one you have to be properly sleep early in the night and wake up early morning. So if you maintain these things that testosterone levels will come to normal level and you see change in 15 to 20 days.

Then coming to third form of erectile dysfunction vasculagenic erectile dysfunction here the blood vessels inside the penis or are damaged so because of these damaged blood vessels the blood is not flowing properly into the penis. For what we advise these patients instead of treating the problem it's better to avoid the problem. So alcohol initial days it will give a boost later it will kill your erection. The same time people with high cholesterol have to avoid junk food, they have to regularly exercise, they have to maintain their cholesterol and triglycerides in the normal levels and when it comes the fourth one neurological erectile dysfunction this is very rare. This is commonly seen in patients who had spinal surgery and patients who had accidents so a spinal cord injury.

So if you have these problems just get your testosterone test done and visit a local urologist. Urologists are the right people to find out and treat these patients so ideally for an erectile dysfunction patient the cost of initial evaluation should not be more than six or seven thousand rupees. With the help of lybrate you can book my appointment. You can come to my clinic which is located in Jubilee Hills Hyderabad.

Erectile Dysfunction Due To Performance Anxiety
Hello Friends!

I am Dr. Vikas Deshmukh. I am a psychiatrist and sexologist practicing in Vashi, Navi Mumbai. Aaj hum baat krenge erectile dysfunction due to performance anxiety. Performance anxiety kya hota hai? Jab apke dimag me sex krne ke alwa koi chinta ya or koi thought ata hai ki apka performance kaisa hoga? Aap apne partner ko satisfy kar payenge ya nhi? Is chinta ki vjha se uska erection lose ho jata hai. Islia usko erection nhi aata hai. Me sare patient se puchta hun ki sex ke lia konsa organ sabse jruri part hai? To bhut sare patient ka answer hota hai - penis or ling. Lekin me sabse important part unko bolta hun - Brain.

Agar apke brain me sex ka vichar aat hai to hi apko erection aata hai. Yadi aap khin pe bhi baithe hain or sexual video ya message padh rhen hain to apko errection aa skta hai quki us time aap apne dimag me sex ke bare me soch rhen hain. Vahan apke partner nhi hota hai lekin sex ke vichar aapko aa rhen hain. Kabhi apko aise vichar bhi aa skte hain ki aap apne partner ko satisfy kar payenge ya nhi. Kabhi misconception bhi apke dimag me rehte hain ki apka penis ka size chota hai. Aap bhut jyada masturbation krte the jiski vjha se uska side-effect ho rha hai. Agar aisa anxiety apko rehta hai to erection apko nhi aata hai or aise hi next time bhi apka confidence loose hota hai.

Is darr ki vjha se aap sex pe focus nhi kar pate hain. Acha sex krne ke lia sex ke vichar maan me chaiye. Meri partner kitni achi dikhti hai. Sex ke time pe apke all 5 senses involve hone chaiye. Ab erection na aane k lia hum kya kar skte hain? Aap kisi psychitrist ya sexologist se milen. Agar or koi reason hai to rule out kriye. Kuch investigation apke doctor krenge. Aap apni sexual life ko enjoy karen. Involvement of other partner is also very important in this case. Agar apka partner isko smjhta hai to is chiz se bhut farak pdta hai. Agar aap apne partner se apni problem chupaoge to miscommunication badhega.

Agar apka partner smjhta hai apko to vo apki anxiety kam kar skta hai. Next technique hai relaxation. Before sexual activity, apko relax krna chaiye ya apni body ko rest dena chaiye. Ye apke doctor apko sikhayenge and apko ye 10 mins tak krna hai. Aap apna mind bhi divert kar skte hain jaise music, fantasies. Ye sari chizen aap performance anxiety se deal krne ke lia kar skte hain. So friends, Than you so much for listening. Meri or videos dekhne ke lia pe login kijiye. Mujhe aap contact kar skte hain Lybrate ke through.

Thank you very much.
