Chronic Pain: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

What is the treatment?

N/A

How is the treatment done?

Chronic pain treatment helps in managing the constant pain felt by the patients. A number of effective treatments are available for people suffering from chronic pain. However, it is important to keep in mind that chronic pain cannot be completely cured, but can be managed. Chronic pain is usually the kind of pain which lasts for 3 to 6 months or more. The patient’s body can keep hurting for months and even years after a certain injury. Chronic pain takes a toll on the individual’s mental health as well. But chronic pain can be managed easily with the right treatment and can help individuals lead a healthier life.

A series of messages zip through the nervous system to make the individual feel the pain. In case of former injury, the concerned area turns on the pain sensors to pass the message to your brain. Back problems, nerve damages, infections, arthritis and past injuries can be the main reason for the pain to start in various parts of your body. Chronic pain can make you feel frustrated and depressed as the pain interferes in the affected individual’s daily life. Often doctors can use antidepressants as a treatment for chronic pain. The pain can also stop you from getting a good sleep and can make you feel extremely stressed as well.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

There are a number of treatments available today in order to manage chronic pain. The treatments try to reduce the pain and help people get back to their daily activities without having to feel much pain. Acupuncture, medications and electrical stimulation can help the concerned individual manage their pain. Minimally invasive psychotherapy and relaxation therapies can make a remarkable change in the patient’s life. Other treatments like biofeedback and behavior modification can also be used to help the patient. Complementary or alternative medications are also used to provide additional relief. These may include treatments like acupuncture, massage therapies and meditation.

There are methods of self-management for regulating chronic pain as well. These self-management treatment methods seem to be extremely promising as people have admitted to seeing a remarkable change in their physical health after trying these methods. Patients engage in activities like decision making, pacing and problem solving and become an active participant in managing the pain. The goal of self-management treatment of chronic pain is to make patients lead a successful life despite having a persistent pain. These self-management methods help people increase their ability to cope with and respond to serious chronic pain.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

Any individual who shows symptoms of facing chronic pain like a dull ache or different kinds of shooting, throbbing or squeezing pain can get themselves checked for chronic pain. Stiffness in the body or soreness can also lead to chronic pain. Individuals who complain of constant lack of energy and having a feeling of being tired all the time may also be suffering from this pain. Any individual who has been suffering from any kind of pain for a period of 3 to 6 months or more should get the treatment for chronic pain.

Are there any side effects?

People who do not have a lasting pain in a specific part of their body are not under the threat of having chronic pain and should therefore, not be treated for the same.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

Certain painkillers which are prescribed to chronic pain patients can have side effects like constipation, nausea, addiction, vomiting respiratory depression among others. However, the alternative treatments do not have any side effects.

How long does it take to recover?

Since chronic pain cannot be completely cured but only managed, the alternative treatment can go on for as long as the patient deems fit. Getting enough sleep and quitting the habit of smoking are some of the guidelines which a person suffering from chronic pain should follow.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

Chronic pain can only be managed and needs regular medications and alternative treatment for reducing the pain significantly. Chronic pain needs a treatment throughout life as it can never be recovered from completely.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

The price of various painkillers prescribed starts from Rs 500.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

Individuals suffering from chronic pain need to get the medications or treatments like acupuncture, biofeedback, electric stimulation, psychotherapy or relaxation therapies all throughout their lives.

Plantar Fasciitis - Signs, Causes & Triggers Of It!

Plantar fasciitis is a common condition that gives rise to heel pain. A thick band of tissue runs across the bottom part of the foot and connects the heel bone to the toes. This leads to inflammation. Those who suffer from plantar fasciitis experience stabbing pain especially when you take the first few steps after waking up in the morning.

As you are up and start moving in the morning, you will feel that the pain decreases. However, after long periods of inactivity or standing in one place the pain might return.

This condition is seen to occur more commonly in runners. Additionally, people who wear improper shoes, lacking adequate support and/or are overweight stand at a greater risk of getting plantar fasciitis.

Signs of Plantar Fasciitis-

Few symptoms of plantar fasciitis include-

• Stabbing pain felt at the bottom of the heels
• Pain arising immediately after exercising but not during it

Cause of Plantar Fasciitis-

Normally, the plantar fascia (ligament tissue) can play the role of a shock absorber, mainly a bowstring that supports the arch in the foot. When tension and stress build up on the bowstring, tiny tears can start to crop up within the fascia. Constant tearing and stretching can lead the fascia to become inflamed and irritated. Many times the cause of plantar fasciitis in certain patients is not entirely clear.

What Makes You Susceptible to Plantar Fascia?

Although the condition of Plantar Fascia can arise without any bulletproof reason, there are certain factors that make you more susceptible to it. These include-

• Age - Those who are aged above 40 but below 60 are more prone to getting this condition
Obesity - Those who are overweight will inadvertently put greater pressure on the plantar fascia
Exercises- Certain exercises tend to put more pressure on the heels than others. These exercise types include jumping activities, long-distance running, aerobic dance and ballet dance.
• Foot Type - Those who have an arched foot or are flat-footed, or tend to walk in an abnormal manner are at a greater risk of putting pressure on the plantar fascia
• Your Job Type - Teachers and factory workers who tend to be on their feet a lot or have to walk on hard surfaces may put stress on their plantar fascia

Plantar Fasciitis is a condition that needs immediate attention because when left untreated it could develop into chronic pain and thus become a source of constant pain. In order to prevent it from hampering your daily activities ensure to change the way you walk. This will minimize the hip, knee and back problems in the future.

Appendicectomy - Everything You Should Know About It!

Appendicectomy - Everything You Should Know About It!

When the appendix (present at the junction of the small intestine and the large intestine) becomes swollen, it is called appendicitis. It can be acute or chronic and is a common cause of abdominal pain. It can happen at any age but it usually occurs between the ages of 10 and 30.

The appendix is an organ whose function is not yet known. It is believed that the appendix helps in recovering from diarrhoea and infections of the small or large intestine. However, the body can function normally without the appendix.

Symptoms of appendicitis

When the appendix inflames, bacteria start to multiply and this leads to the formation of pus inside the appendix. The build-up bacteria are accompanied by the following symptoms-

• Pain in the abdomen
Nausea and vomiting
• Diarrhoea

Appendicitis requires immediate medical intervention. If it bursts, it expels poisonous pus into the abdominal cavity and it can be life-threatening.

Surgery for appendicitis (Appendicectomy)-

In most cases, surgery is the only permanent cure for appendicitis. Appendicitis often causes an abscess. Your doctor will recommend a course of antibiotics and then drain the abscess through your skin. After the treatment for infection, the doctor will prepare you for surgery.

Appendicectomy can be a laparoscopic surgery or an open surgery. If you are already taking some over-the-counter medicines, or are pregnant or if you are allergic to some medicines, you must inform your doctor before the surgery. On the day of the surgery, the doctor will ask you to not drink any water for seven or eight hours prior to the operation.

• If the surgery is laparoscopic, the surgeon makes three minute incisions in the abdomen. Then a camera (which displays images of the inside of the abdomen) and surgical instruments are inserted through the three holes into the abdomen. With the help of these, the surgeon extracts the appendix. A laparoscopic surgery is more advantageous than an open surgery because laparoscopic surgery reduces the risk of infection, causes less pain after surgery.

• When an appendix bursts, you will need immediate surgery. And for this, a surgeon will opt for an open surgery. In case of an open surgery, an incision is made in the lower right side of the abdomen. Then the appendix is removed and the wound is closed with stitches. Since it is an open surgery, the surgeon gets the opportunity to clear up your abdominal cavity if the appendix had burst. An open surgery is the most preferred type of surgery when it comes to a ruptured appendix.

The benefit of the surgery lies in the fact that you will never again get appendicitis. Moreover, a surgery can prevent the complications that arise from appendicitis.

Recovery after an appendicectomy-

• If the surgery is laparoscopic, you will be discharged from the hospital within a day.

• If the surgery followed a burst appendix, you may be required to stay in the hospital for around a week. The doctor will recommend bed rest for at least three weeks and you will be able to get back to work in a month.

If you have appendicitis, you will continuously have to endure pain in your abdomen. The situation becomes grave when your inflamed appendix bursts. Doctors advise people with appendicitis to undergo surgery so that the eventuality of a burst appendix does not arise.

Suffering From Endometriosis - What Are Its Treatment Options?

Suffering From Endometriosis - What Are Its Treatment Options?

Endometriosis is a condition in which the endometrial cells lining the inside wall of the uterus begin to grow outside the uterus. In a majority of the cases, the growth is on the ovaries, the Fallopian tubes, or the tissues around the uterus. In rare cases, it occurs in other body parts. Normally, women in the age group of 30 to 40 years are prone to developing this condition and genetics is believed to be the reason behind this disorder. It is a serious medical condition if it causes discomfort to the woman.

Signs and Symptoms:  The signs and symptoms of endometriosis include chronic pelvic pain, pain during menstruation, urination, and intercourse, longer periods, bleeding between menstrual cycle, bloody urine or stool, and urinary and bowel problems.

Treatment methods:  In many cases, endometriosis goes undiagnosed and it can only be diagnosed through biopsy. If the biopsy confirms endometriosis, then it can be treated in the following ways:

  • Hormonal treatment: Hormonal treatment includes birth control pills, placement of the intrauterine device, Gonadotropin-releasing hormone, and Danazol or Medroxyprogesterone (Depo-Provera).
  • Pain medication: Pain killers with anti-inflammatory properties are prescribed to those who suffer from painful menstruation.
  • Surgery: This is the last treatment option and only advised to those who did not find relief from medicines and hormonal treatment. Surgeons try to remove the areas affected by endometriosis but in severe cases, the ovaries might need to be removed completely.

Complications: It is important to treat endometriosis on time as delay can lead to complications. The complications arising out of endometriosis include the following:

  • InfertilityThe scarring and distortions caused in the reproductive organs due to endometriosis and the endometriotic cysts can make a woman infertile.
  • Scarring: The bleeding and the inflammation caused by endometriosis leads to scarring of the tissues of ovaries.
  • Ovarian cysts: Sometimes, the abnormal growth of endometrial cells outside the uterus spreads to the ovaries and starts growing over there, leading to cysts.

Prevention: As it been mentioned before, in many cases, endometriosis goes undiagnosed but it can be prevented or its symptoms managed effectively if one is cautious. One should do the following:

  • Exercise regularly: Exercise increases immunity and also reduces the level of estrogens, which slows down the progression of endometriosis. It also provides relief from pain.
  • Eat nutritious dietA diet rich in vitamin and minerals ensures good health of the reproductive organs and a fine immune system. This helps to fight the symptom of endometriosis and keeps the disorder in check.

Endometriosis is known to affect a large number of women and since the early symptoms are mild or confusing, most of the time they go undetected. Nevertheless, a woman can avoid it and the complications arising out of it by being mindful of the symptoms. They should also undergo a regular pelvic exam and follow the instructions of their gynecologist. This would ensure timely detection of the disorder and if this is ensured, the management also becomes easy.

Chronic Pain - 8 Simple Steps That Can Help Manage It!

A headache is one of the most common ailments experienced by most people. While some have a definite cause and pattern, others come and go without a proper cause being identified. The severe ones which recur and can affect the quality of life are dreaded by the sufferers. In these people, they know the pattern to it and the thought of it can be scaring. With a lot of research being done, the good news is that there are simple but effective ways of managing these headaches.

Read on to know some of the most common simple ways to get rid of your headache.

  1. Quieten down: One of the triggers for a headache is bright light and sound and noise. When you try to reduce the amount of noise, light, and sound, surprisingly the headaches will disappear or reduce in intensity for sure.
  2. Eat on time: Hunger headaches are one of the most common types, and not many realize it. When the gap between two meals is too long, headaches occur. Eating on time is a good and simple way to manage headaches in those who are prone to it.
  3. Drink it up: Surprisingly, dehydration can lead to headaches, especially when combined with being out in the sun. For fear of having to pass urine, do not make the mistake of not drinking enough water. Keep sipping small amounts and prevent a headache.
  4. Meditate: Meditating and improving blood flow through the cells helps in preventing and/or reducing the intensity of headaches. This helps relax the muscles and improves pain tolerance too.
  5. Headgear: For those who are used to wearing tight headgear, loosening up can help in the relief of headaches. Be it a scarf or bandana or a hairband, this can compress blood flow and cause a headache. Loosening these can reduce a headache.
  6. Massage: A good massage around the forehead, neck, and shoulder is one of the best ways to relax and relieve headaches. This also soothes the nerves and improves blood flow.
  7. Hot/cold therapy: A good shower (preferred to bath) with alternate hot and cold water works wonders for most people with headaches. While the cold water soothes your nerves, the hot water improves blood flow and provides relief.
  8. Medications: Needless to say, if none of the above work for you, you would have to take medications. The trick to taking the pill that works for you (prescribed by the doctor, of course!) as soon as you realize the onset of a headache. This helps in controlling the pain quickly and getting rid of a headache.

While headaches are inevitable, there are definitely ways to manage them easily.

Chronic Bronchitis - 7 Tips To Help You Get Well!

Are you suffering from chronic bronchitis and are looking for ideal treatment measures? Bronchitis occurs when your windpipe or trachea and your large and small bronchitis within your lungs get inflamed because of infections and several other causes. The condition is considered to be chronic when your cough with mucus is persistent for at least three months. Chronic bronchitis is a condition that falls under the group of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Smoking, inhaled irritants, secondhand smoke, inhaled fumes, and certain viruses are primary causes of chronic bronchitis.

Symptoms
The symptoms and characteristics of chronic bronchitis are as follows:

  1. Phlegm may be produced. The production of excess phlegm indicates that your lung and the lower respiratory tract are infected.
  2. The cough experienced is present on almost all days of the month, for over a period of three months.
  3. The forceful coughing because of chronic bronchitis is painful, and makes your abdominal and chest muscles sore. The coughing is likely to be very severe, and may injure your chest walls or make you faint.
  4. During exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, wheezing may be experienced because of inflammation in the airways and muscular tightness. This, in turn, leads to shortness of breath.

Treatment
The treatment of chronic bronchitis depends on the cause. There is no specific cure for the condition, and its treatment aims at improving your lung function and reducing the symptoms.

  1. Several medicines are used for managing the cough, and for loosening and clearing secretions. In the case of uncontrollable coughing spells, cough suppressants might be prescribed.
  2. Broncho dilator inhalers are used for opening the airways and for the management of wheezing.
  3. Certain nebulizer treatments are also recommended in some cases.
  4. Corticosteroids are used for reducing the inflammation in the airways. These may be used in the form of inhaled corticosteroids, or may be taken orally.
  5. In some cases, antibiotic medications may be required for the treatment of chronic bronchitis. Antibiotics are usually used when there is a bacterial infection, and in people with chronic lung problems, who require antibiotics to be treated.
  6. Home oxygen might be required in extremely serious cases of chronic bronchitis.
  7. In very rare cases, a patient may have to be hospitalized in case of severe breathing difficulty that does not respond to treatment. This is necessary in cases of complications in chronic bronchitis, and in patients who suffer from underlying heart problems.

Chronic Pain
Symptoms and Treatment for Chronic Pain

Hi. I am Dr. Shantanu Mullick from Navi Mumbai, Pain Clear Clinic. Today, the whole world is suffering from chronic pain.

Million patients they are suffering from different types of chronic pain like back pain, neck pain and cervical spondylosis. Mainly, due to their lifestyle disorders but they are also suffering from different complicated pains like cancer pain, but most of the patients they are suffering from chronic pain with frozen shoulder, knee pain, back pain. They are going for surgery but many times these surgeries may not help in that way. That is why this newer therapy, intreventional pain therapy which is nowadays throughout the world and very much effective to support this kind of chronic pain to rule out the disease as well as to treat the level of the root cause.

Normally, the patients who are suffering from the back pain, many times I have seen that after regular therapy , physiotherapy, exercise, they are not getting relief and they are going for the surgery. In those cases, interventional pain therapy will help the to rule out the cause. We do treat these patients according to MRI reports but all these treatments are done without surgery. So many times, surgery may not help these kind of back pains and in cervical pains. So in those pains, interventional pain therapy, without damaging the anatomy helps a lot. So if you see the pain where we can see the patient is suffering from disc pain. We can see here the nerve root coming there and the disc is bulge and we commonly call it as slip disc problem or disc hernation. In those cases, the surgeons are getting the bones, there is a lamenectomy but without doing surgery as per MRI report we are under forescopic guidance in the operation theatre we are going inside the disc and treating them without any surgery and day care.

So patients automatically get very good relief and after that we are able to support the patients with physiotherapy exercises and this way we can help different types of patients suffering with back pain, neck pain. On the other hand, in case of cancer pain also when the patients are not getting relief with the morphine or from very strong pain killers, we can support them with interventional pain therapy to block their pains permanently working in the spinal cord.

Another, dreadful pain condition is trigeminal neuralgia where patient is suffering from pain in the face usually the pain comes where patients complain of sharp shooting, electric shock kind of pain. It will appear on one side of the face. Actually the trigeminal nerve is coming from the brain and it is supplying the nerves of the face in three ways. Usually it happens in one side and those patients initially are treated with medical therapy and any times they are not getting support in those cases we are treating with radiofrequency ablation therapy. So different types of new treatments have for this chronic pain where patients without knowing their disease, they keep on taking pain killers and damaging their other organs of the body so that is why pain management nowadays is a very very effective subject and separate speciality to support the chronic pains those who are suffering from long types of disease.

At last, I want to say if you want to more about this, contact us through lybrate.com.

Treat Chronic Pain
Pain can be musculoskeletal like back pain, shoulder pain or knee pain. Watch out to identify yours.

I am Dr. Siddharth VermaI deal with patients suffering from chronic pain. Chronic pain is any pain which is more than 12 weeks or three months in duration and if a patient is suffering from chronic pain they require special treatment and they require physician specially trained to treat the people who have chronic pain. So this pain can be musculoskeletal, then it may be back pain or the pain of the knee. There are various structures in the back which can give rise to the pain.

I'll tell you more about it if you see our skeleton, this is a model showing the back of a human and as we can see these are the vertebral bodies or the small bones which make up the human back, and these the yellow things, these are the nerves which are coming out of the small holes which are known as the foramen. And what you see here between these two bones is a disc and this is a portion of these two bones because when a person moves he actually bends, rolls place then all this moment like this. It occurs on this joint as you can see and this disc this help us to maintain this mobility. So now what happens is with growing age this can become bulging like you can see this red buzzing portion this compresses on this root which is coming out of here. This is what may lead to the pain there may be other mechanisms also and it is very essential that qualified pain physician actually evaluates you. If you have any back pain and then physician treats you accordingly.

So there are various equipment options which are available and ranging from drugs. So you can start with drugs and go to injections in the nerve roots and then we can further do pinhole surgery. It is like we can go through the needle to that and then gradually release the patient of his or her pain.Similarly, like back pain is the treatment for those suffering from knee pain. As we can see it's also 2 bonus and then instead of the disc we have this cartilage which is present here. Muscles slide this cartilage and this thing over here is your muscle which is coming over this knee joint. If this muscle is not strong enough or if the cartilage is damaged then you may have problems with your knee.

So what do we do is that if a person comes to us with the pain of the knee then we need to access a lot of ligaments. If you see it's a very complex and complicated joint if you see there are a lot of small ligaments and it is meniscal. There is cartilage so we have to analyze where the pain is coming from, once we analyze that then we prepare accordingly. We can start with drugs, we can use substances which help to form the cartilage, we can use Prolotherapy which is a new form of regeneration therapy which helps to regenerate cartilage, or we can numb those nerves which are actually carrying this pain.So you do not worry this will not lead to any weakness.

So musculoskeletal pain after revaluation can be treated and can be managed and to get rid of your pain or to know more you can simply visit my lybrate website.

Chronic Diseases And Homeopathy
Hi!

I am Dr. Abhay Patil from Ashwini Homeopathy. We have established our homeopathy center in 1994 and we have been practicing since then. Well, me my wife and my assistant are running this clinic. We specialize in all types of chronic diseases and believe in constitutional homeopathy treatment. We believe that a person has to be treated holistically. In homeopathy, history of a person is very important to us. History includes his nature, his eating habits, past history, family history. After taking the history details we try to understand the patient and treat them constitutionally. Homeopathy is the only science which treats the person holistically. We improve the general immunity of the person.

So as the chances of him falling sick decreases. He feels better both at the mental, physical and psychological level. Each and every case take minimum 1 hour for us. The system is first my assistant takes the case history. Then we analyse it all together and prescribe medicine. We try to maintain the highest quality standards available in homeopathy. We treat all types of chronic diseases from Cancer, Asthma, Arthritis, Psoriasis, Eczema etc. From 5 to 7 years we are now specializing more in Cancer cases. As you know cancer is is on rampage. It is mainly due to bad lifestyle, bad habits, the greed which is present in people. This greed is taken up by cells and they try to multiply producing diseases like cancer. With homeopathy we can definitely cure cancer. I am not saying that we can cure all cases. It depends on which states the patient is at and what is the individual resistance of the person.

If the person is walking, talking, if he is more or less comfortable his immunity is great, then the chances of cure are very high. If he is bedridden, he is already taken chemotherapy, radiotherapy then I am sorry to say then the chances decreases significantly. There is a wrong misconception among people that homeopathy is only passive , it contains steroid. So if this was the fact we have been treating more than 15000 patients till now and homeopathy is the science which is progressing daily throughout the world.

Homeopathy is the only science where minimum dosage are administered and we do not have any side effects in the patients. Of course if the drugs are taken indiscriminately without the physicians knowledge any and every medicine can cause side effects. So if you take homeopathy from a right homeopath, chances of you getting a holistic cure right from your mental as well as physical level are very high. So if you want to meet me or you want to take an appointment you can contact lybrate.com or reach our website.

Thank you!
