Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for your query. Diabetes mellitus is a disease occurring due to deficiency of insulin (pancreas produces less than required amount) or due to resistance to the action of insulin due to excess fat in the body. This is true of Type 2 diabetes. In T1 DM, Beta cells of pancreas are almost fully destroyed, hence there is no insulin at all. In this situation patients have to take insulin for survival and blood glucose control. It T2 DM, initially there is some amount of insulin production goes on. However, as diabetes continues for many years (20 to 25 or even longer), slowly insulin production declines. Therefore, almost every single patient of T2 DM will have to take insulin some time in life to control blood glucose. This happens even when there is good very good blood glucose control in initial years. Thanks.
