Exercises should be avoided when there is acute knee pain as the situation can become worse.
Following tips can be used to get relief.
1. Take anti inflammatory drugs like paracetamol or ibuprofen round the clock to decrease pain and inflammation. (since patient is elderly, make sure that kidney function is normal)
2. Apply cold pack over knees 10 mins for 4 times a day.
3. Once pain is decreased, start knee stretches and strengthening exercises. Start exercise for weight loss when pain is decreased. Swimming will be beneficial in this situation. Avoid treadmill running.
