Your pain is usually caused by placing too much stress or strain over the trapezius (shoulder) muscle. Treatment is relaxation followed by strengthening of those particular muscles. 1) start your treatment with hot fomentation (using hot water bag over the painful area) - this will help in reducing the spasm. 2) go for self massage technique: tilt your head back, and with the palms and fingers of each hand, squeeze the flesh at the base of your neck on either side of your spine. Then, slowly roll your head forwards, still squeezing your skin. Hold the stretch for 10 seconds, then return your head to an upright position. The amount of flesh you can squeeze depends on your state of relaxation. Follow the above regime for 1 week and then start strengthening exercise to avoid re-occurrence. Regards!
