I am diabetic, hba1c in may was 7.5. My current fasting blood sugar ranges from 115 to 135 and ppbs ranges from 170 to 220. When it goes beyond 200 (happens once or twice a week), I take glycomet sr 500 mg that time. I am not taking any other medicine and trying to get into a regular exercise routine to reduce sugar naturally. Is it ok if I am taking med only when my pp sugar is more than 200 and not take it on other days?

Hello. You are not doing the correct thing by taking your medicines only when the sugar goes beyond 200. At your level of hba1c, you neee to take medicines on a daily basis. taking it intermittently will only cause daily fluctuations and lead to complications

It is not ok to take diabetes medications as and when required. Diabetes is not like fever. If you're not taking diabetes medications regularly you risk the chance of beta cell failure rapidly. Beta cells are responsible for insulin production. It is possible that blood glucose could go up at times when you are not checking your blood sugars. Taking metformin will help you than taking it. Benefits are more.

Hello, thanks for the query. I have seen the details. Please understand that when hba1c% is more than 6.5% diabetes is confirmed. The fbg 126 mg and above, pp 200 mg & above are also considered as diagnostic for diabetes. In such situation avoiding regular treatment is not advisable. Your hba1c% clearly shows there's diabetes. So there's need for regular drug treatment. If you have any questions please do come back. Thanks.
