Dear Ms. lybrate-user, some women are known to suffer with what is called pregnancy rhinitis due to the hormonal changes. Once the pregnancy is over, this condition also resolves. The common medications for cold including otrivin are best avoided if possible. There is not enough evidence to support their use in pregnancy. Low dose nasal steroid sprays are however found to be more safer. A large amount of simple measures will provide more symptom relief than using the medication. Saline nasal spray/ drops can be used very frequently (5-6 times or more in a day) sinus rinsing (jala neti), use of a humidifier etc are other methods. Please liase with your obstetrician or consult an ent surgeon for the best advise and treatment. Best wishes.

1. Do saline gargles daily (preferably twice). 2. Whenever possible do steam inhalation also. 3. Cover your nose and mouth with hanky for at least 30 sec when you go in dusty areas also when you go in and out of ac. As our nose is the most sensitive part of our body, when there is temperature difference between two rooms or inside n outside, then if we not protect our nose, it gets affected. 4. Drink hot liquids --hot liquids relieve nasal congestion, prevent dehydration, and soothe the uncomfortably inflamed membranes that line your nose and throat. Homeopathic treatment has very encouraging results. Consult online for details.

I would advise to stop otrivin and take steam inhalation instead. Otrivin can have side effects if taken for a long time on mother and baby. Otrivin should never be used beyond 5 days at stretch it leads to increased nasal blockage by itself.

You are having rhinitis medicamentosa. It is due to indiscriminate use of otrivin drops. Read about it. Schedule an online consult for an optimum solution. Otherwise the problem can worsen and cause more discomfort.
