But when this step is skipped they keep on growing first locally in some organ and then by spreading through either lymph channels or blood stream. Based on whether the cells are growing at one place or have spread to other places the symptoms change. Locally it is either due to any lump / swelling of crores of cancer cells or due to intereference of these cells in the organ's function. For example cancer in liver cannot be easily felt from above as swelling, but it can cause symptoms like indigestion or jaundice due to interference in liver's function of helping digestion. A breast cancer on the other hand usually presents as a lump in breast or axilla. The best way a person can do, is to identify and respect all the symptoms they have, which persist or are unusual. Some good habits like breast self examination are useful in identifying a symptomless early stage cancer. Cure is a word which is used with a very high caution. Cancer is defined by two most important characteristics - metastasis i. E. Spreading to other places different than site/organ of origin, and recurrence. Few cancer cells usually remain dormant after completion of initial treatment and then re grow after some time. There are many reason and factors helping it or acting against it. So cure is a word usually not used in cancer. And that's why patients are kept on strict surveillance after treatment for 5-10 years. Experts in medical fraternity believe that a patient surviving for more than 5 years may be called cured. But there are many patients who recur with same disease even after 5 years, 10 years even more than that. The goal of treatment of cancer is to improve survival and give best quality of life possible to each patient. In medicine always is always wrong and never is never right.
