Hi. I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia and acid reflux a year ago and been using esomeprazole for a year now. Even though I do not feel heartburn when I use the pill, I still feel the food coming up in my throat when I burp, this happens every day. After a meal, or a couple of beers, some of the food or drink comes back to my mouth with a burp and I can feel that food stays in my esophagus for a while before it goes down to my stomach and it comes back up with every burp. I want to know if this non-acidic reflux when im on ppi causes damage to my esophagus like acidic reflux does. Im really afraid of barrett's esophagus and do not want my reflux to cause it.

Your symptoms are suggesting that you have symptomatic hiatal hernia and will probably get benefitted with funfoplication surgery. But before concluding that, you need to get examined by a gi surgeon for decision and execution. Thanx.
