Hello, if she has hb 5.5, she needs to get admitted and might need blood transfusion. As severe anemia causes load on heart and if ignored may cause heart failure. Investigations are to be done to know the cause and type of anemia. Medications can then be given specifically for the cause. Rest is important. Avoid heavy work. Give green leafy vegetables and meat as they are rich in iron.

First thing first. See a doctor. Doctor will find out why she is anemic. She could be having excessive bleeding, piles, hookworms or gastric ulcer. Once all causes are ruled out doctor may prescribe her iron and folic acid combinations. She will be advised to take green leafy vegetables, whole grains, legumes more.

Hemoglobin 5.5 is not good. There will be definetely a cause for this much low heamoglobin. She needs medications because if further heamoglobin reduction occurs she will be having great complications. As such she is needing blood transfusion right now but decision to do transfusion can be taken after direct consultation only. So visit a consultant as early as possible.
