I am experiencing a vivid sensitivity in particular one tooth in lower jaw. Might be the premolar. Though I can't see any cavity. Pain is not going away. Please suggest.

Dear Lybrate User, Sometimes the tooth sensitivity is not just because of any cavity but could be due to several other reasons like cervical abrasion of tooth, gum recession thereby exposing the roots, fractured tooth enamel etc. The tooth should be visually examined by a dentist to arrive at the correct diagnosis. If the sensitivity keeps lingering on, it could lead to the permanent damage of the tooth's nerve (called Dental Pulp) and then you would require a Root Canal Treatment. Meanwhile, use some anti-sensitivity toothpaste like Colgate Sensitive, Sensodyne, Vantej or Thermoseal to proovide temporary relief. Apply the toothpaste to the offending tooth, leave it there for a minimum of 5 minutes and then gently brush off. Good Luck!

Dear Lybrate user, if there's just sensitivity, it can be taken care of by using any anti-sensitivity toothpaste like colgate or sensodyne for a month. Take the toothpaste on your finger and apply it on the concerned tooth like an ointment. Let it stay for 7-8 minutes and then brush it off normally. Remember, anti sensitivity toothpastes work best if used in this manner. If you also experience pain, I would advise you to consult your dentist as the tooth might be progressing towards decay that needs to be treated by filling it up or doing root canal treatment depending on the stage of tooth decay. Don't delay further and visit your dentist.

Dear Lybrate user, Sensitivity in a tooth can be due to abrasion usually seen in the neck of the tooth (caused by applying too much pressure during tooth-brushing) which abrades the outer protective layer of the teeth thus leading to sensitivity. It could also be due to a deep cavity hidden between two teeth. Kindly visit a dentist for a thorough check up and get the treatment done accordingly.
