After going through your symptoms and history, you might be suffering from Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). It is commonly seen in software engineers or those who use computers/ mobiles/ tabs constantly for a long duration. Here are a certain tips I suggest which you bring relief to your symptoms. 1. Minimize the glare from the screen to an optimum level or use an antiglare coated screens on iPad/ laptops/ desktops/mobiles. 2. Blink frequently. We invariably tend to blink less when focussing on the screen. Make sure you blink frequently so that there is adequate tear secretion and lubrication to the eyes which will prevent dryness and the problems associated with it. 3. To reduce your risk of tiring your eyes by constantly focusing on your screen, look away from your computer/ mobile at least every 20 minutes and gaze at a distant object (at least 20 feet away) for at least 20 seconds. 4.Use cooling glasses to protect your eyes from the radiation from your system. 5. These symptoms tend to aggravate during summer. So you can use lubricating eye drops such as Refrest tears eye drops or Tears naturale forte eye drops which will be available over the counter. I hope these remedies will help you alleviate your symptoms.

The idea that anal sex always hurts is a common myth, not unlike the idea that vaginal intercourse always hurts the first time.  Neither of these is true. The truth is that if you’re doing it right, no  sex should ever hurt unless you want it to. By doing it “right,” I don’t just mean the right technique. Doing it right also means paying attention to your body and knowing how to respond when you notice a change in how sexual stimulation is feeling. But in the last Anal sex, and anal play more generally, can be dangerous and come with bad effects on your body whether it's your first or 101st time. That said, there are some unique risks that come with anal sex that you need to know about in order to prevent them from happening to you. These include: Tearing Tissue Tearing Muscle The Vacuum Effect Lack of Sensation Fecal Contamination.

Symptoms And Treatment Of Allergic Rhinitis!

Allergic rhinitis is defined as allergic symptoms in the nasal passage. Allergic rhinitis can be seasonal (occurring during specific seasons) or perennial (occurring year round). The allergens that most commonly cause seasonal allergic rhinitis include pollens from trees, grasses and weeds, as well as spores from fungi and moulds. The allergens that most commonly cause perennial allergic rhinitis are house dust mites, cockroaches, animal dander and fungi or moulds. Perennial allergic rhinitis tends to be more difficult to treat.

How does allergic rhinitis occur ?

This condition occurs when allergens (allergy- causing substances) come into contact with the nose, and usually also the ears, sinuses, and the throat. When allergens come in contact with the lining of the nose and sinuses, they trigger the cells to release the chemical histamine, which causes the allergy symptoms described below.

What are the symptoms ?

  • Nasal congestion
  • Sneezing
  • Watery " runny nose"
  • Itchy eyes,nose,or throat
  • Puffy eyes or 'allergic shiners'
  • Post nasal drip
  • Tears

These symptoms may occur during a certain season or year long. They can occur at any age.

What is the treatment for allergic rhinitis ?

A number of medications, including antihistamines, intranasal corticosteroids, and decongestants are available to control symptoms. Allergen immunotherapy could provide long lasting benefit. You can "train" your immune system not to react exaggerated to an allergen anymore. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Risk factors for allergic rhinitis

Allergies can affect anyone, but you’re more likely to develop allergic rhinitis if your family has a history of allergies. Some external factors can trigger or worsen this condition, including:

  • Cigarette smoke
  • Chemicals
  • Cold temperatures
  • Humidity
  • Wind
  • Air pollution
  • Hairspray
  • Perfumes
  • Cologne
  • Wood smoke
  • Fumes

Ayurvedic concept of rhinitis:

As per Ayurveda, Allergic rhinitis is compared with Vata- Kaphaja pratishaya. The concept of Ama, Asatmya and virudh aahara also predict the allergic conditions.

Ama is the product of impaired digestion and metabolism. It affects Rasa and Rakta Dhatu leading to manifestation of Pratishyaya. Wrong food combinations (Virudh aahar) having antagonist properties like fish with milk, fruit juice with milk, clarified butter with honey, ice cream after night meals, etc. leads to allergy.

Ayurveda believes in balancing the three doshas present in the human body, thus treating the disease on the whole. Treatment involves clearing the sinuses and expelling phlegm, alleviating the relevant dosha and detoxification. To permanently resolve this disorder, dietary and lifestyle adjustments may be necessary in addition to the strengthening of the immune system. Panchakarma is an effective means of treating Allergic Rhinitis.

Ayurvedic treatment for allergic rhinitis:

  1. If the symptoms are severe and in chronic conditions, Vamana Panchakarma treatment, followed by Virechana is administered. This helps to relieve Ama and balance Tridosha.
  2. In some cases, where the patient has normal digestion strength, Nasya treatment (nasal drops therapy) is administered with herbal oils such as Anu taila or Shadbindu Taila.
  3. After the above Panchakarma treatments, Ayurvedic medicines are administered to improve respiratory immunity and strength of upper respiratory tract.

Useful Ayurvedic medicines in treating allergic rhinitis:

  1. Nimbarajanyadi tablet – Contains neem and turmeric as main ingredients.
  2. Chavikasavam – Fermented Ayurvedic liquid, also used in urinary tract disorders.
  3. Mahalaxmi Vilas Ras – Also useful in the treatment of skin diseases, diabetes, Sinus, non healing wounds, etc.

Other medicines: Narada lakshmi vilas rasa, Anand bhairava rasa, tribhuvan kirti rasa, shringarabharaka rasa, Mayur shringa bhasma, Abhraka bhasma, Lavangadi pills, Sitopaladi choorna, Marichayadi yoga, vyoshadi pills, Khadiradi pills are suggested.

Diet management:

  1. Take – Light food, lukewarm water, Kapha nashaka foods like little spicy food, saindhav salt, legumes, soups etc.
  2. Avoid – heavy food, fermented food, congestive food, too hot or too cold food, soar food, non vegetarian food, sweets, banana, curd, yogurt, ice creams, deserts, cakes, yellow grams, etc.
  3. Avoid Alcohol and cold beverages.

Working Professionals - Ways They Can Keep Their Eyes Healthy!

Technology is both boon and bane. Most jobs nowadays are partially automated, and it has become necessary for many to work long hours on the computer. If you are one such person, then you might be experiencing one or many symptoms related to eyes. The eye muscles get fatigued when eyes stare on the computer screen for a long time, and this can cause a host of eye problems. Referred to as Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), the condition can range from eye pain to problems with eye sight.

The following is a short account of a few simple but effective measures that you can follow to avoid eye problems caused by extensive use of computers.

  1. Simple Tips to Follow: Eye care regimen should be followed by everyone, but special care needs to be taken by the individuals who always works on the computers and has to look on the screen at all the times. The current digital age has greatly altered the way we use our eyes. Here are few simple tips you can follow in this regard.
  2. Take Eye Breaks: You should make it a point to turn your eyes away from the screen of the computer for giving a break to the eyes. While working at the computer, it is to be made sure to take a break every 20 minutes and look away at least 20 feet for a duration of about 20 seconds. This is more popularly known as the 20 – 20 Rule and very helpful for the eyes.
  3. Frequent Blinking: Frequent blinking leads to spread of tear film. It might happen that you need to stare at the screen of the computer for a long period of time which denies you of taking any kind of breaks. In this situation, it is recommended that you should blink more frequently which is beneficial for the health of the eyes.
  4. Use Eye Drops: This can be another healthy tip for the maintaining good and healthy eyes. Using the eye drops for the eyes which are actually artificial tears or eye lubricants which play a crucial role in reducing the strain in the eyes always keeping the eyes hydrated. One point is to be remembered here is that the eye drops should be used after consultation with an ophthalmologist so that no side effects arise later on.
  5. Using Computer Glasses: The individuals who heavily use computers can use single vision glasses for creating a gap between the eyes and the screen of the computer. A mininmum of 30 inches from eye is required. This can have a significant impact on the health of the eyes.
  6. Orthoptic Exercises: Certain types of muscle imbalances (forms of strabismus) can be improved with eye exercises. This form of therapy is called orthoptic therapy. The most common disorders that respond to orthoptic therapy are convergence insufficiency and intermittent exotropia.
  7. Anti-glare Screens: Anti-glare glasses can certainly help you work from your laptop screen more comfortably, but you can also protect your eyes by adjusting the screen so it's in a good position for your eye line. Remember to give your eyes a break every now and then by focusing on something in the distance.

Apart from these practices, adopting healthy lifestyle habits such as eating a balanced diet, exercising, quitting smoking and wearing sunglasses while out can help preserve eye health in general. Also, it is essential to undergo regular eye check up to catch any eye problems at its early stages.

Should You Wash Your Eyes Daily?

M.S. Ophthalmology
Ophthalmologist, Vadodara
Should You Wash Your Eyes Daily?

Often many patients who visit wash their eyes daily with water based on the practice followed by their ancestors or other family members and friends.

Is this necessary? Let’s understand.

The idea behind washing eyes with water appears to be to clean the eyes and remove dust/dirt, feel fresh and cool in hot weather etc.

The fact is, eyes clean themselves every minute through tear exchange during blinking which happens about 12-16 times per minute and so there is no need for additional cleaning. To feel cool in hot weather, one can always clean face with their eyes closed

Is there any harm in washing?

Yes. The tear fluid has a special composition friendly for the eye surface. Its pH, osmolarity, antimicrobial property, etc. gets disturbed by putting water or drops in the eyes. Water coming down from the overhead tank into tap or wash basin may be containing bacteria, fungus, parasites, etc. of serious nature. It can also contain other impurities. So there can be a risk of infections or irritation of the eye.

So eyes should never be washed?

The only situation when eye should be profusely washed with water or any sterile liquid like sodium chloride bottle is when some chemical falls in the eye. Do not wait for anything and wash the affected eye with lot of water even before contacting a doctor. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Ligament Injury Of Knee - How Arthroscopic Surgeries Can Help?

MS - Orthopaedics
Orthopedist, Hubli
Ligament Injury Of Knee - How Arthroscopic Surgeries Can Help?

Our knee is supported by several ligaments which help in movement. But what happens if you tear a crucial knee ligament? Tears or 'ruptures' in ligaments of the knee are common in sportsmen and/or accident victims, especially of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

Though the ACL is not the only ligament of the knee, it is one of the most crucial to maintain stability of the knee joint. Any tear of this ligament frequently leads to chronic knee instability. When a tear in this ligament happens, patients know it immediately as they report feeling or hearing a “pop” along with pain and a feeling of an unstable knee.

Types of ACL injuries
ACL injuries can be classified by the amount of damage to the ligament. They can be partial or complete tears.

  • Grade I Sprain: In this there is some stretching and micro-tearing of the ACL, but it is otherwise intact. This does not require surgery.
  • Grade II Sprain or partial disruption: In this there is some tearing and separation of the ligament fibres and the ligament is partially disrupted. Usually, the knee joint is also moderately unstable. Arthroscopy surgery may be required.
  • Grade III Sprain or complete disruption: In this, there is total rupture of the ligament and the ligament is completely disrupted and the joint is unstable. Surgery is usually recommended for the young and active.

Treatments
There are many different ways that this ligament can be reconstructed depending on the age, activity level, and gender of the patient. ACL tears can be treated using arthroscopy and minimally invasive surgical techniques.

Though non-surgical methods are available, like rehabilitation and physical therapy, they don’t help much with complete ACL tears.
1. Exercises- this helps to increase the range of motion of the injured knee, decrease the amount of swelling, and maintain muscle control.
2. Arthroscopic surgery for reconstruction of the ACL

It can be of 2 types- Repair and reconstruction of the ACL.

  • A repair means that the injured ligament is left in place and the doctor tries to fix it back to the tibia or femur bones of the leg from which it has torn. This is a half-baked option as it does not restore full knee function.
  • A reconstruction, on the other hand, means that the ACL is substituted by a new ligament. The surgeon creates a soft tissue “graft” and uses it to reestablish knee stability. The body populates the graft with living cells and permanently attaches it in place. And, it usually takes about 4 to 6 months for the graft to start functional like the real ACL. Reconstruction surgeries help patients to get back to the same or higher degree of activity without pain or instability. The ‘graft’ usually comes from 2 sources
    • Taken from elsewhere in the patient’s body, called an autograft
    • Donated by donors, called an allograft

Knee arthroscopic surgery is a minimally invasive surgery which is done using pin hole cameras and under general or local anesthesia. The torn ligament is removed and the graft is introduced in its place and secured.

Post surgery outlook

  • Immediately after the surgery, the patient is placed in a brace. He or she can leave the hospital the same day if he/she wants.
  • The patient has to use crutches for preventing putting weight on the operated leg.
  • After-care is crucial for full functioning of the operated knee. The early postoperative period is devoted to restoring motion and decreasing swelling. After this the focus shifts to strengthening the knee joint.
  • The recovery of function following an arthroscopic ACL reconstruction continues over a few months and it usually takes 2-3 months for the patient to feel normal.

As long as the operated knee is cared for properly and other injuries are avoided, the benefits of the surgery are usually permanent.
