I have a small hard lump beside my last molar. It is extremely painful. My teeth pains sometimes too if there's food stuck in it. Does it look like cancer?

I have a small hard lump beside my last molar. It is extremely painful. My teeth pains sometimes too if there's food ...
Dear Lybrate User, Try not to worry by labelling the lump as Cancer. The lump or swelling might have cropped up due to some infection of the teeth or the gums and needs to be investigated by a dentist. Such lumps or swellings could be thoroughly and easily investigated by your dentist or a specialist dentist and if need be, a biopsy can be done to rule out any malignancy. At this point though, try not to be anxious and immediately get yourself examined by a dentist. Good Luck!

Dear Lybrate User, You have partially answered your queries yourself. The post-operative healing after wisdom teeth extraction normally depends on the amount of wear and tear that had taken place during the extraction and also on the way you have taken care of the extraction wounds after the extraction, as advised by your dentist. Regular medication as prescribed by the dentist helps heal the wounds in less than 15 days if everything is good. There could be a possibility of decay with your second last molars that would become evident upon taking an X-Ray of those teeth. Visit your dentist for more comprehensive diagnosis and the ultimate relief of pain. You might not require RCTs and just a simple restoration (filling) will take care of the problem. Good Luck!

I just removed my tooth but it's base is still there as the dentist is unable to extract it because of excessive pain. So if still left there does it cause any harm in future.

Dear Lybrate User, By base you mean to say that the remaining tooth or root structure (a root stump to be precise!) has been left behind by you dentist while extracting the tooth. Now if the tooth was already infected, leaving the tooth or root fragment like that might call for infection and pain in the future. If the dentist has left the last bit of the root inside which is not loose and accessible, it might be left in-situ. You need the dentist to take an X-Ray of the remaining tooth or root to determine its precise location. For all practical purposes, if you do not have any symptoms, you may defer the extraction but if you have lingering pain or any infection, you MUST get the remaining portion extracted by some more specialised dentist like an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon. Take Care!

Dear Lybrate User, From the description of your symptoms, it seems that the pan particles got stuck up between the gums overlying your wisdom tooth or probably in a cavity that has formed somewhere on your tooth. Just try to clean that area gently with a toothbrush and use a lukewarm water mouthrinse with a pinch of salt added, 3-4 times daily. Eating excessive amounts of pan, gutka and tobacco in any form is definitely harmful for the teeth, gums and surrounding oral tissues and may lead to oral cancer, if not limited. You are advised to consult your local dentist at the earliest so that the actual problem may be diagnosed and you can get rid of your trouble.

Dear Lybrate User, As you have already mentioned that your dentist is going to place componeers on your front teeth to close the diastema (gap), you can patiently talk out the exact time of the procedure with him/her. Componeers would be a cheaper option as compared to traditional Orthodontic Braces/Appliances. It's your personla choice now to decide whether you want to go in for an expensive treatment or a less cheaper one. The results of Orthodontic treatment are almost life-long but the Componeers do not remain throughout life. Choose wisely, live well!

Dear Lybrate User, Nothing to be worried of. Just keep sipping plenty of water throughout the day and chew on some sugarfree chewing-gum (like Orbit or Happydent), 2-3 times a day. The weather these days is quite sultry and often humid so that could cause such problems. Meanwhile, just get a random blood sugar test done. If need be after that, go in for a fasting and post-prandial test. Get yourself examined by your local dentist at the soonest possible.

Dear Lybrate User, the pain in the jaw could be due to a lot of reasons including decayed teeth, gum and bone infections, muscle and joint stiffness. In your case, there might be an underlying decay that has evaded your eyes and only a dentist can visually inspect the region. Or there could be a gum infection. You must visit a dentist at the earliest to seek complete relief from your symptoms. All the best!

Tooth aching and Needs a Root canal treatment as soon as possible. With the Nice doctor.
Dear Lybrate User, It's hard to know that the patient requires a Root Canal Treatment. But now that you know of it, do not delay in getting the treatment initiated by a General Dentist or even an Endodontist (Root Canal Specialist). Root Canal Treatment is a very simple procedure that every qualified dentist can perform. Only in cases of complex situations, a specialist's help is sought (Endodontist). Good luck!

Dear Lybrate User, You can safely go ahead with your personal moment and nothing will happen per se except that take care not to lacerate your and your partner's lips. Chapped lips do call for an emollient application like glycerine or vaseline, to keep the lips moist. Enjoy!

Hi lybrate-user! Well your symptoms suggest that you suffer from Pericoronitis, which means that the gum tissues around your wisdom teeth become inflamed, on and off. It's very common with the youngsters these days as the nature is slowly eliminating the not quite used wisdom teeth as part of an evolutionary process, because our diets have become too refined, so there's not much use of extra teeth to chew the food. You should not panic and immediately visit a dentist for the check-up. He would take an X-Ray of the affected tooth and will suggest you the remedy, most probably being a "painless" extraction of the tooth. Meanwhile, just try to maintain a good oral hygiene and occasionally rinse mouth with lukewarm water with a pinch of salt added to it. It serves as a natural mouthwash. Private consult's welcome. Take Care!

Are You Scared Of Going To The Dentist? Fear NO More!

Are You Scared Of Going To The Dentist? Fear NO More!

Here's why not to worry about going to your dentist:

1. A professionally qualified dentist knows exactly what his patients want and hence leaves no stone unturned in allaying their fears and phobias pertaining to dental procedures, with an ethical and empathetic approach.

2. The dentist uses his mellifluous "Vocal Anesthesia" along with PAINLESS "Local Anesthesia" to make all procedures seem enthralling and pretty comfortable.

3. A good rapport sharing with the patient is the ultimate remedy of all problems. Rude, incompetent  and greedy dentists just bring everything down to ramshackles.

4. Use of high-quality instruments, Diode Lasers (e.g. Biolase!), Computer Controlled Delivery of Anesthesia (The WAND!) etc. can mitigate the discomfort level of the patients to much an extent.

5. Well-spacious and ventilated dental offices with serene, spick and span surroundings, audio-visual treats and a welcoming & courteous staff, all go a long way in ameliorating the apprehensions of a patient.

6. A stringent infection control protocol and International Sterilization Guidelines (e.g. OSHA and CDC) if meticulously followed, instill a mega-confidence in the patients that they are in safe hands.

7. A well-justified treatment cost with completely transparent treatment planning and no hidden-costs, help the patients make their optimal choice in selecting the right treatment for themselves and speak a lot about the dentist.

Dear Lybrate user, mouth ulcers most commonly occur due to stress. If they are recurring repeatedly, you should consult a general physician. Increasing water and fluid intake, maintaining good oral hygiene, avoiding spicy and fried food might help in curbing them to some extent.

Dear Lybrate User, Scaling and Polishing should not be a too much costly affair for you as the rates vary from 500-2500 INR. Some dental clinics might even do it free for you as a part of their promotional campaign. It's not at all a complicated procedure and a gentle dental clinic might do it at a very economical rate for you. If you'd be lucky enough, you might avail it for free as well! Be well.

Dear Lybrate user, you seem to be suffereing from a painful and irritable tooth condition known as "Pericoronitis" which implies the inflammation of the soft tissue cover around a partially erupted crown of a tooth (wisdom tooth/third molar). It would be prudent for you to get the tooth extracted under able supervision of an expert General Dentist or a more specialized Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon. The doctor would require an X-Ray (called an Intra-Oral Peri-Apical Radiograph or may be an OPG) before deciding on the fate of the tooth. You should not delay the treatment and plan to get the tooth extracted soon after the initial infection and inflammation, considerably subside. Meanwhile do some lukewarm-saltwater mouth rinses 3-4 times/day and eat a soft and non-spicy diet. Be well!

Dear Lybrate user, mouth ulcers are mostly due to stress or dehydration. The reasons mentioned by all the doctors are also correct. If you have a stressful life, try to relax. Keep yourself hydrated and increase your intake of liquids and juices and water. Avoid extremely hot or spicy food. The ulcers take 7-10 days to heal normally so nothing to worry. Pay special attention to your oral hygiene.

Dear Doctor, My mother, aged 50 years is experiencing tooth ache sporadically. Up on consultation, we realized that the lower wisdom tooth grew inclined and impacting the adjacent tooth. It even started causing infection a little in the gums surrounding that tooth. Do you recommend tooth extraction surgery? If yes, will there be any complications post surgery?(she is diagnosed with diabetes a few weeks ago) Where to get the surgery done and what prerequisite care need to be taken to ensure no complications afterwards.

Dear lybrate-user, if the impacted tooth has affected the adjacent teeth and gums, its essential to get rid of it to avoid long term infections to which diabetics are already prone. So go ahead with the treatment. A good oral surgeon would handle the case gently and there won't be any dire complications except for some moderate swelling due to anesthesia and some post-op pain for which you would be prescribed pain killers and antibiotics. Because she is not a diabetic since a very long time so it won't be a problem. Take your medications properly, follow the dentist's instructions and get it extracted.
